Samúel Kári Friðjónsson (born February 22, 1996 in Reykjanesbær ) is an Icelandic football player . The Icelandic international can be used defensively and is under contract with SC Paderborn 07 in Germany .
Career
society
Samúel Friðjónsson comes from the youth of Keflavík ÍF . From 2013 he was used for the club's first team in the first Icelandic league and in the league cup.
In the summer of 2013, the Icelander was signed by the English second division club Reading FC and used in their youth teams in the Premier League 2 . With the U18 he failed in the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup .
For the 2016 season, Samúel Friðjónsson moved to the first Norwegian league for Vålerenga Oslo . Due to a knee injury, however, he missed this season completely and could only be active for the club in the following season . He came to thirteen competitive appearances (two goals) for the professionals in the league and cup and nine games for the second team (one goal).
After another season, in which the Icelander made it to the quarter-finals with Vålerenga, he switched to the first division promoted Viking Stavanger for the 2019 season on loan . As a regular player, the midfielder finished the season with the club in 5th place and became Norwegian Cup winner.
For the second half of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season, which began in mid-January 2020 , Samúel Friðjónsson then moved to SC Paderborn 07 in Germany without any further activities for Oslo , where he received a contract valid until June 2022. He made his Bundesliga debut on matchday 23 against Bayern Munich when he came on for Dennis Srbeny in the 83rd minute .
National team
After appearances for Icelandic youth national teams, including for the U21s , with whom he took part in the 2017 European Championship , Samúel Friðjónsson was appointed to the national team of Iceland for several friendly matches in 2018 . He was in the squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia , at which Iceland was eliminated in the group stage, but was not used. In the subsequent UEFA Nations League , the defender played with Iceland in the highest of the four leagues.
