Karl Berling

Karl Heinrich Ludwig Berling (born August 19, 1857 in Schwarzenbek , Duchy of Lauenburg ; † 1940 ) was a German art historian .

Karl Berling first studied architecture for nine semesters at the Royal Polytechnic in Dresden and then worked in architectural offices. He then studied art history at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1885 . From July 1, 1887, he worked at the Kunstgewerbemuseum , then a department of the Kunstgewerbeschule, in Dresden, initially as an assistant, from 1890 as director's assistant and from 1901 as a museum director. From 1904 until his retirement in 1923 he was director of the now independent arts and crafts museum.

His specialties were stoneware , earthenware , Meissen porcelain and Saxon pewter .

Berling was a member of the Corps Teutonia Dresden.
