The Eckernförde Citizens' Rifle Guild from 1570 (also known as the Yellow West Guild ) is the oldest documented citizen association of Eckernförde .
history
The guild was founded in 1570 as a merchant. Their goal was to protect the property of the citizens as an armed protection community and to help in the event of death. The guild statute of the "laudably privileged riflemen and dead guild" was drafted in Low German and translated into High German in 1650.
In 1713, during the Great Northern War , the guild brothers were last deployed "under arms" to defend the city and protect the population against looters and robbers.
After 1933 the guild lost its independence and it was not until 1951 that the tradition of guild festivals began again. Since 1953 historical rifles have been used to shoot the Papagoy bird on the pole for royal dignity. The individual parts of the bird must be shot in a given sequence. Parts shot incorrectly must be triggered by the shooter with a beer dispenser.
Today the guild is a traditional association that cultivates the customs as part of the city's history. The guild celebration takes place every year at Whitsun.
The members were originally in uniform. Today they wear a black suit, white shirt with a white bow tie and a black top hat. There is also the yellow vest with shiny gold buttons, which is the background of the nickname “ Yellow West Guild” . The guild leadership, the officers' corps, wears green and white uniforms and a cock-feathered bicorn.
The guild is a statutory, registered association. She is a member of the North German Rifle Federation .
