history

Liebau castle ruins

The place or castle Liebau was first mentioned in 1327 as "Lubawe". In Liebau, one of the historical centers of today's municipality of Pöhl, three noteworthy buildings were built over the centuries. First there was a fortification in the village, then the castle ruins, also known as the mountain castle, and the manor house. The weir system was built by the Counts of Everstein before 1200 . After the original castle was abandoned in the 13th century, a mansion was built about half a kilometer away on the site of today's ruins of Liebau Castle . The (new) castle on the mountain spur above the White Elster was first mentioned in documents in 1327. In that year, Vogt Heinrich von Plauen offered the “castrum Lubawe” to the Bohemian king as a fief. In 1357 the castle came to the Wettins through an exchange . The Lords of Dölau , who had owned Castle Liebau since 1441, arranged between 1500 and 1550, among other things, renovations in the Renaissance style . During the Thirty Years War , Swedish troops caused damage in 1640, which was repaired by 1644. With a brief interruption from 1599 to 1607, Liebau Castle remained in the possession of the Dölau family until 1725, after which it passed to the sister of the widow of the last owner, Johanna Charlotte von Beust . She lived in the then dilapidated mountain castle until 1742. After she moved out, it inevitably began to decline. The subsequent owners moved their residence to a manor house. The Siebert family, who had owned the manor since 1862, had it demolished and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style in 1875/1876 , which is also in ruins today.

The place Liebau belonged to the manor of the manor Liebau until the 19th century . With regard to the administration, Liebau belonged to the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Plauen until 1856 . In 1856 the place was affiliated to the Elsterberg court office and in 1875 to the Plauen administration . In 1945, Phillip Hermann Siebert was expropriated as part of the land reform . The Liebau community took over the manor house in 1950. Since then it has been used as a residential building.

On July 1, 1950, Liebau was incorporated into Ruppertsgrün . As a result of the second district reform in the GDR , the municipality of Ruppertsgrün, to which Liebau had belonged since 1950, became part of the Plauen-Land district in the Chemnitz district in 1952 (renamed the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in 1953 ), which became the Saxon "Plauen district “Was continued and in 1996 it merged with the Vogtlandkreis. After the mansion had been vacated by 1991, the building began to fall into disrepair. Between 1995 and 1997, safety and restoration work was carried out on the castle ruins. An association is currently planning to rebuild the manor house. Of the castle ruins, parts of the stair tower, the hall and the surrounding walls are still present. The annual ruins festival has been taking place there for over two decades. The municipality of Ruppertsgrün with its districts Rentzschmühle, Liebau and Christgrün merged with the municipalities of Helmsgrün, Herlasgrün, Jocketa and Möschwitz to form the new municipality of Pöhl as part of the municipal reform in the Free State of Saxony on January 1, 1994.
