Michael John "Johnny" Giles (born November 6, 1940 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player and coach . He spent his playing career successfully at Manchester United and Leeds United, among others . For the Irish national football team , he played 59 international matches in just under 20 years.

Giles came to Manchester from Dublin in 1956, where his first club was Manchester United . With United he won the FA Cup in 1963 and went to Leeds a year later. With Leeds United Giles was twice English champion, twice FA Cup winner and won the Exhibition Cities Cup in 1968 and 1971 . For Leeds United, the midfielder scored 114 goals in 525 games. His last stop in professional football was West Bromwich Albion . There he worked as a player-coach until 1977. He was featured 59 times for the Irish national football team and scored five times in the goal. Giles later became the first player-coach of the Irish national team, but missed the qualification for the European Championship in 1976. After working at West Brom, Giles moved to the coaching bench of the Shamrock Rovers before he mainly coached clubs in North America in the 1980s. Today he works as a sports journalist for Irish radio.

For his autobiography A Football Man - My Autobiography , Giles received the Irish Book Award in the sports book category in 2010 .
