Noel Cantwell

Noel Euchuria Cornelius Cantwell (born February 28, 1932 in Cork , † September 8, 2005 in Peterborough ) was an Irish football and cricketer .

In 36 international matches for the Irish national football team , in which he made his debut in 1953, the defender scored 14 goals by 1966. Cantwell was not only a professional footballer but also a professional cricket player, and played in both sports for the Irish national team.

He played at Western Rovers , Cork Athletic , West Ham United (1952 to 1960/248 games with 11 goals) and Manchester United (1960 to 1967/144 games with 8 goals). Manchester United coach Matt Busby selected Cantwell to lead Manchester’s young players such as Bobby Charlton after the Munich disaster when eight players died in a plane crash. In 1963 he won the FA Cup with Manchester United .

Both English clubs, as well as in the Irish national football team, he served as captain .

After his playing career, he coached Coventry City and Peterborough United, as well as the New England Tea Men and Jacksonville Tea Men cricket clubs .
