Alexis "Alex" Méndez (born September 6, 2000 in Los Angeles ) is an American football player .

Club career

Méndez, the second of five children of Mexican parents, was a member of the CD Chivas USA youth academy , where he played with Ulysses Llanez and Efrain Alvarez , among others . After the franchise was dissolved in late 2014, he followed his youth coach Brian Kleiban to LA Galaxy . There he went through the junior teams for the following years and lost in 2016 (U15 / 16), 2017 (U17 / 18) and 2018 (U18 / 19) three times in a row in different age groups in finals for the national championship of the academy teams. From August 2017 he also played several times in the United Soccer League for the reserve team of LA Galaxy; Spread over two seasons, the player, who was mostly in midfield, made a total of twelve appearances and scored a goal on his last appearance in July 2018 in a 5-3 win over Seattle Sounders II .

In the summer of 2018, he completed a trial training at the German club SC Freiburg and signed a professional contract that came into force in January 2019. After playing for the A-youth team in the U-19 Bundesliga until the summer of 2019 (12 games / 3 goals), he was promoted to the Freiburg reserve team during the summer break. He left the club at the end of July 2019 and signed a three-year contract with Ajax Amsterdam . Initially, he is intended for their reserve team Jong Ajax in the second-rate Eerste Divisie .

National team

In the 2018 CONCACAF U-20 Championship , he scored eight goals for the US U-20 team , making him the second-best goalscorer behind Mexican José Juan Macías . Méndez scored a 1-0 lead in the second group stage against Costa Rica and scored both goals in the 2-0 final win over Mexico. For his performance, he was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament by the tournament's technical study group . Due to the success, the team also qualified for the U-20 World Cup 2019 in Poland.

At the end of 2018 he was named US Soccer Young Male Player of the Year by the US Association .
