Ulysses Llanez junior (born April 2, 2001 in Lynwood , California ) is an American football player of Mexican descent, who is mostly used in the position of a striker . In 2017 he played his first games in professional football and has been playing in the A-youth team of German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg since 2019 .

On December 30, 2019, he was called up for the first time for the United States national team and made his debut on February 1, 2020 in a 1-0 win in a friendly against Costa Rica , where he also scored the only goal of the encounter.

Club career

Career start in California

Ulysses Llanez was born on April 2, 2001 in the city of Lynwood near Los Angeles in the US state of California and named after his father, Ulysses Perez Llanez senior, whom he also regards as his greatest athletic role model. At the age of six he began his career as a soccer player and also played during his school days. Among other things, he was used by the U-11 to the U-13 at Barcelona USA , one of the youth centers of FC Barcelona in the United States, and won two national championships with the club. In 2013 Llanez moved to the U-14 team of the major league soccer franchise CD Chivas USA . There he was active until the franchise was dissolved in 2014 and last appeared for their U-15 team. Subsequently, the Mexican-born offensive player joined the offspring of the MLS franchise LA Galaxy and was primarily in action for its U-13 / U-14 team in the 2015/16 season. In 22 championship games in regular time, the goal-scoring striker scored 22 goals and also scored a goal in one of the three play-off games he played at the end of regular time. He was also used for the first time in the Galaxy U-15 / U-16 team; in his three appearances as a substitute he was still goalless.

The following season 2016/17 Llanez spent alternately with the U-15 / U-16 team and the U-17 / U-18 team of Los Angeles Galaxy. While he had played in 17 games of the U-15 / U-16 in the regular season, all of which he was on the field from the start, and contributed eleven goals, he played for the U-17 / U-18s made an appearance from the start in twelve championship games and scored six goals. There was also a play-off for the U-15 / U-16 team, as well as three appearances and one goal in the play-off games of the U-17 / U-18 team. In 2017/18, the 1.78 m tall attacking player was in action for several teams in the franchise from the Californian metropolis. In addition to the U-16 / U-17 team, for which he played a regular league game and contributed a goal, these were also appearances in the U-18 / U-19 team and in the United Soccer League represented reserve team and at the same time second professional team of the franchise, LA Galaxy II . For LA Galaxy U-18/19, Llanez made eleven games in the 2017/18 season, ten of them from the start and three goals in the regular season, as well as six appearances, all of them from the start, and three goals in the subsequent play-offs. After helping LA Galaxy to two consecutive play-off finals (2017 and 2018), the young talent also experienced some individual successes. In 2018, for example, he was named West Conference U-16/17 Player of the Year and also made it into the West Conference U-16/17 Best XI .

As already mentioned, Llanez also appeared for LA Galaxy II during this time, parallel to his time at the US Soccer Development Academy . He made his debut in a professional league on August 6, 2017 when his team lost 2-0 to Phoenix Rising , when he was brought into play by his coach Mike Muñoz in the 88th minute as a substitute for Josh Turnley . On May 11, 2017, he was already on the bench in a 3-0 home defeat against the Real Monarchs . A few weeks after his professional debut, the striker played another role in the then second-rate North American United Soccer League when he came on for Tyler Turner on September 17, 2017 in a 2-1 away defeat by Sacramento Republic in the 83rd minute . Further appearances in the USL 2017 , which LA Galaxy II subsequently finished in 13th place in the Western Conference , did not appear for Llanez in this game year.

Only in the following game year 2018 did Muñoz use the young offensive player again more regularly. In Galaxy's weak initial phase this season, Llanez was often used on the left and right outside and came on April 23, 2018, in a 1-1 home draw against New York Red Bulls II , to a first goal in a competitive game as a professional, when he brought his team 1-0 ahead in minute 35 after a presentation by Ethan Zubak . Also in his next two league appearances on May 5th and May 27th Llanez was allowed to register as a goalscorer. After that, his championship appearances, mainly due to his appearances in the junior national teams of the United States, which he had at that time, became increasingly rare. After he had often not been part of the LA Galaxy II squad for several games in between, Llanez recorded his tenth and thus last appearance in the USL 2018 on July 2, 2018. Similar to the previous year, Galaxy was again unable to fight the majority prevail over the competition and ranked 14th in the Western Conference at the end of the regular season .

Move to Germany

In 2019 he was part of the LA Galaxy offspring for some time, but was no longer used for the franchise's second team, which started in March 2019 . Instead, on April 2, 2019, his 18th birthday, he announced via Twitter that he had signed a contract with German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg . At the beginning of the Wolfsburg team , it was primarily intended for their A-youth. In October 2018, the US media reported a likely change in attacking player; The change could only take place officially when they reached the age of majority. Llanez made his debut in the North / Northeast season of the A-Junioren-Bundesliga on the first matchday of the 2019/20 season when he won the 5-1 home win over the A-Jugend of FC St. Pauli was used from the beginning and for the full 90 minutes by his coach, the former professional Thomas Reis , and contributed two hits and one assist. The American also scored twice in the following two championship games, so that he scored six goals after just three games. Initially used as a right winger or in the attacking midfield, he was soon used by Reis as a left winger - his positions only rarely varied afterwards.

After he had missed all three league games in September 2019 - after Thomas Reis left and Henning Bürger took up coaching - he acted extremely dangerous again from October 2019 and was again a regular on the Wolfsburg offensive at the end of the month. Until the game was interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany in mid-March 2020, Llanez had scored eleven goals and six assists in 16 championship appearances, making him the second strongest Wolfsburg player this season after Lenn Jastremski. After the Wolfsburg- based team qualified for the sixteenth-finals of the 2019/20 UEFA Europa League in calendar year 2019 , Llanez was brought into the professional squad for the first time in February 2020 by coach Oliver Glasner for this against Malmö FF . Just a few days earlier, the American had made his debut for the senior team in his home country and had also scored the 1-0 winning goal against Costa Rica . He was not used for the professionals and then belonged again primarily to the club's U-19 team, but only a few weeks later he trained with the professional team for the first time.

National team career

From the U-14 to the U-18

Llanez gained his first experience in a national team of the US American Football Association at the age of 13 at a training camp for the US U-14 team in October 2014. In the spring, he took part in a training camp in Slovenia with this selection . In a game against the offspring of the then Slovenian third division club NK Bravo , whose men's team had just been promoted from fourth division, Llanez scored two goals on May 11, 2015. In 2016 and 2017, he participated in various tournaments with the United States U-16 team. Among other things, he was in action at the Torneo delle Nazioni 2016 and also completed the Val-de-Marne friendship tournament from late October to early November 2016 and the International Dream Cup in June 2017 . Between 2016 and 2017, he made at least nine U-16 international matches in the United States, scoring three goals. In February 2017, Llanez also received a call-up to the Mexican U-16 national team .

In 2017 he missed both the participation of his country in the CONCACAF U-17 Championship in 2017 , as well as participating in the following autumn U-17 World Cup in 2017 . In between, however, he was used in three friendly international matches in August 2017, where he contributed one goal in an encounter with Russia . Under Omid Namazi , the 16-year-old made his debut in the US U-18 selection in February 2018 . Llanez was used for the first time in two friendly matches against the senior colleagues from Costa Rica at the UCF Soccer and Track Stadium in Orlando , Florida . After missing the four U-18 internationals in May 2018, he did not return to the US U-18 national squad until August 2018, on the occasion of the Václav Ježek memorial tournament, and won the sixth victory with his home country Memory tournament in six years. He was used by Javier Pérez in all four games as a right winger, where he got three assists and one goal. He scored the said goal in the final against Japan , when he converted his shot from penalty points in the 5-3 win on penalties .

Appearances for the US U-19 selection and debut for the U-20 team

Also in 2018, the 17-year-old offensive player took part with the US U-19 selection in the US Soccer U-20 Men's Invitational that took place in September at the IMG Academy in Bradenton , Florida. The U-19 national team of the United States and the U-20 men of the USA competed against the U-20 selections of Venezuela and Jamaica . Llanez was used in all three games, scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over the US U-20 team and came on a hit, as well as an assist in the final 4-1 over Jamaica. Llanez won this mini-tournament with the U-19 national team with two wins and one draw. Before the 2018 CONCACAF U-20 Championship , which was held in Bradenton in November 2018, Llanez was also part of the United States U-19 squad. A few days before his 17th birthday, he made his debut for the United States' U-20s in a friendly against France in March 2018 .

Successful time with the US U-20 men

After he had already participated in the preparation, the Mexican-born offensive player was part of the American team at the 2018 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. Mostly used by Tab Ramos as a left winger, Llanez came to appearances in six of the eight games in his home country, where he contributed a total of seven goals and three assists. Among other things, the 13-0 victory over the American Virgin Islands , in which he completed the first 45 minutes and was involved with three goals and three assists in all six goals scored in this half in his home country, should be emphasized . Because of this performance, he was subsequently recognized as a player of the third game day. In the end, the Americans, who were victorious in all of their eight games, won the CONCACAF U-20 Championship for the second time in a row . At the end of the tournament he was selected as one of eight Americans (along with three Mexicans) in the Best XI of the tournament. At the end of the year he was nominated as US Soccer Young Male Player of the Year , but had to admit defeat to Alex Méndez .

The following year he represented his home country in the preparation for the U-20 World Cup 2019 in Spain in March and was used in all three games, although he remained goalless. At the U-20 World Cup, held between May and June 2019, for which the four best teams in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship had qualified, he was also part of the 21-man squad in the United States. In addition to David Ochoa , Konrad de la Fuente and the later nominated Julian Araujo , he was one of four players in the squad who were born in 2001 and would therefore also be eligible to play in the U-20 World Cup in 2021 . At the finals in Poland , Llanez, who had been on the bench in the first two group games without being used, was used for the first time in the third group game against Qatar when Ramos sent him onto the field in the 63rd minute for Konrad de la Fuente. The player, who was deployed as a right winger, had an equally long mission in the subsequent round of 16 against France, before he and the team were knocked out 2-1 in the quarter-finals against Ecuador . Llanez was in action in this encounter from the second half.

Debut for the United States senior team

After that, more than seven months passed without a single international appearance by Llanez, who in December 2019 - at that time still in the A-Jugend of VfL Wolfsburg - surprisingly by Gregg Berhalter , the coach of the US national team, for an im January 2020 in Doha training camp in which this was convened. Actually, Llanez would have participated in a training camp with the US U-20 selection in December 2019, but this did not materialize for him due to his participation in the men's training camp. After the training camp was canceled due to the prevailing situation in the region, Berhalter used it from the start on February 1, 2020 in a test match against Costa Rica at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson , California. In the game he converted after a foul by the Costa Ricans on Reggie Cannon in the 50th minute of the penalty, which was enough for the final score 1-0. After receiving a yellow card in the 69th minute of play , he was replaced by Jonathan Lewis four minutes later .
