The LA Galaxy , also under the full form Los Angeles Galaxy known is a franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS) from Carson , Los Angeles County , California . The franchise was founded in 1995 and began playing in the MLS 'inaugural season in 1996 . The team colors are deep space blue, gold and white. The name "Galaxy" refers to Los Angeles as the home of numerous Hollywood stars. The franchise is owned by the Anschutz Entertainment Group .
Galaxy has the second highest average viewership in the entire MLS after the Seattle Sounders . The "Galaxians" and the "Los Angeles Riot Squad" are among the biggest fan clubs. The mascot of the Galaxy is "Cozmo", a frog-like alien .
LA Galaxy became the first MLS club to end a season with a financial profit. Alongside DC United , Galaxy is one of two US clubs to win today's CONCACAF Champions League .
history
1995–1996: founding years
Major League Soccer was founded in 1992 as part of the award of the Soccer World Cup to the USA. The first MLS season was played in 1996. LA Galaxy was one of the founding members of the new North American professional league. In the first season, the Californians reached first place in the Western Conference and lost in the final of the MLS Cup against DC United. The team was trained by the German Lothar Osiander, who a. a. the US national soccer team had trained. The most successful player was Eduardo Hurtado , who scored 21 goals and was named "Most Valuable Player" of the MLS.
1997–2005: The successful years
The second MLS season started for the Californians with a win in eight games. Until the end of the regular season, Galaxy still fought for a place in play-offs. In the Conference semifinals, the team lost to Dallas Burn . Internationally, LA Galaxy took part in the CONCACAF Champions Cup this year , where they could reach the final. There the Californian CD Cruz Azul lost 3: 5.
In the years to come, the team managed to take the top ranks of the table again and again. In 2000, the first international title was celebrated by winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup. A year later, the team won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in the final against New England Revolution . LA Galaxy’s long-running streak was crowned by winning the MLS Cup in 2002. The team was able to repeat this in 2005 and at the same time win the US Open Cup for the second time. This made them the third team in MLS history to win the double . During this time, more and more international players belonged to the squad. The best known were Andreas Herzog , Jorge Campos , Luis Hernández and Cobi Jones .
2006-2010
The 2006 season was disappointing. For the first time in the club's history, the team missed the play-offs. The coach Steve Sampson was fired during the season and replaced by Frank Yallop . Manager Doug Hamilton died of a heart attack on the return flight from a CONCACAF Champions Cup game at Deportivo Saprissa ( Costa Rica ) .
In November 2006 club president Alexi Lalas announced that the club was interested in signing England international David Beckham . On January 11, 2007, David Beckham confirmed the move from Real Madrid to Los Angeles, on July 21, 2007 "Becks" played his first game for Galaxy, where they again missed the play-offs. In 2007 the team received a shirt sponsor for the first time with Herbalife. The $ 4.5 million contract was signed for 5 years.
Also in the 2008 season Galaxy could not reach the play-offs. Due to this early elimination from the championship, the two stars David Beckham and Landon Donovan spent the winter on loan from AC Milan and FC Bayern Munich in Europe in order to keep themselves fit for the new season.
The MLS season 2009 could be crowned by reaching the final of the play-offs. There Galaxy lost to Real Salt Lake on penalties. Previously, the team was first in the Western Conference, but missed winning the MLS Supporters' Shield, as the Columbus crew could achieve one point more. The top scorer was Landon Donovan with 12 goals. As runner-up in the regular season, LA Galaxy qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2010/11 . In the Preliminary Round, the qualifying round of the tournament, the team was eliminated against Puerto Rico Islanders FC .
On the last day of the regular season of the MLS season 2010 , the team won the MLS Supporters' Shield. Galaxy thus qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League 2011/12 . The most successful goalscorer was Edson Buddle, he scored 17 goals in the regular season.
2011: MLS Cup
At the end of the regular season of the following season, the team again received the MLS Supporters' Shield. In the subsequent play-offs, the Galaxies faced the New York Red Bulls in the quarter-finals. In the first leg they won 1-0 and the second leg also went 2-1 to the Californians. In the semifinals, Real Salt Lake was defeated 3-1. In the final of the MLS Cup, LA Galaxy met Houston Dynamo. Landon Donovan scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute, giving his team the third MLS Cup.
Since 2012
At the end of the 2012 season, David Beckham left the Galaxies after five years. His last game was the final of the MLS Cup 2012. Last year's play-off winners were once again victorious and won the cup for the fourth time. After the team had only made it to the semi-finals of the play-offs in 2013, they won again in the final of the play-offs in 2014. At the end of the season, Landon Donovan announced his retirement.
Coat of arms and colors
The current colors of the Los Angeles Galaxies are white, dark blue and gold. With the arrival of David Beckham in 2007, the logo and team colors were changed. Before that, gold, green and white were the defining colors. In the first season, the Californians still wore black and gold jerseys.
Since its inception, the franchise has had two logos for its team. The first was gold, green, and black. In the middle the word “Galaxy” could be read. In 2007 the logo was changed.

From 1996 to 2002, all home games were played in the 92,542-seat Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California . For the games in the US Open Cup, the Titan Stadium, which is located on the grounds of California State University in Fullerton, California , was mostly avoided.
In 2003, the Galaxies moved into what was then the Home Depot Center , which is located on the campus of California State University in Carson, California . The stadium was named after the non-profit organization Dignity Health on January 1, 2019 . The stadium holds 27,000 spectators and was the second specially built for football stadium in the MLS, with American football and rugby games being played here. LA Galaxy has shared the stadium with CD Chivas USA since 2005 .

Galaxy currently has three organized fan groups: the Los Angeles Riot Squad (LARS), the Angel City Brigade (ACB) and the Galaxians.
mascot
The mascot of the galaxies is a frog-like alien named "Cozmo". According to his vita, he beamed himself from his spaceship to the Home Depot Center on June 7, 2003. He is known in the universe for his goalkeeper reflexes at the speed of light.
He is popular with fans for his entertaining interludes during home games. In addition, he travels across Southern California representing the team and teaching kids the basics of football.

The team anthem is in English "We are the Galaxy", it is sung by the group Kinky.
Rivalries
In the 1990s , DC United was the LA Galaxy’s main rival. Both teams faced each other in 1996 and 1999 in the MLS Cup . Both games were won by United. The rivalry is still strong today.
After the turn of the millennium, a strong rivalry developed with the San José Earthquakes . In 2001 the Earthquakes won the MLS Cup with a 2-1 win after extra time against the Galaxy. After the 2005 season, the Earthquakes club license and all players were transferred to Houston and have continued to play there as the Houston Dynamo since then . In 2008 the San José Earthquakes were re-established as the 14th MLS team.
Until the end of the 2014 season, CD Chivas USA were the main rivals of the Galaxies. Both teams contested the only local derby of the MLS until then and played the so-called "Honda SuperClassico" during each season. For many fans, however, this rivalry was more about marketing than sport.

Ownership and Management
The MLS franchise LA Galaxy has belonged to the Anschutz Entertainment Group , which is a subsidiary of the Anschutz Corporation , since October 1998 . AEG is represented by Philip F. Anschutz .
Kelly Cheeseman oversees all economic matters. In addition to his coaching role, Bruce Arena was also the general manager of the franchise. Former US international Chris Klein is president of the franchise. He is responsible for the public representation of the galaxies. Furthermore, he takes care of the financing of the Academy and is on the board of the Swedish football club Hammarby IF , which is also part (49%) of AEG.
Sponsors
In March 2007, LA Galaxy signed a five-year contract with the US company Herbalife . In doing so, the company secured the rights to appear as the team's shirt sponsor. In the meantime the contract has been extended several times.
Other sponsors include McDonald’s , Toyota , UPS and adidas .

Since the end of the 2011 season, there has been a 10-year contract with the television broadcasting networks Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes, which are part of the Southern California branch of Time Warner Cable. In total, this contract brings the Californians $ 55 million. This makes it one of the best contracts for broadcast rights in the MLS. Alternatively, games from LA Galaxy are also broadcast on Fox Sports West.
All games can also be received via the KLAC AM 570 and KTLK 1150 AM radio stations. The broadcast radius is limited to Los Angeles County and Orange County .

LA Galaxy II is an American football franchise the USL Championship in Carson, California .
The team, founded in 2014, represents the reserve of the MLS franchise LA Galaxy and plays in the USL Championship, the second highest division in the United States.
history
On January 29, 2014 it was announced that LA Galaxy wants to install its own reserve team in the USL Pro with the start of the 2014 season. This made a partnership between the MLS Reserve League and the USL Pro possible. The LA Galaxy Reserve had already played in the MLS Reserve League, also under coach Onalfo. Here you could get two West Division victories.
The team played their first game in the USL Pro on March 22, 2014 against the Orange County Blues . At the end of the regular season, the team took 3rd place and qualified for the play-offs. Here you failed only in the semifinals against Sacramento Republic . In the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the Californians won in the second round against amateur club Cal FC. In the third, however, you lost on penalties against the PSA Elite. The most successful player was Chandler Hoffman, who moved to Houston Dynamo after the season .

Galaxy Youth Academy
The youth work at LA Galaxy is carried out by the Galaxy Youth Academy. The U-18 and U-16 teams play in the leagues of the US Soccer Development Academy, a youth division system in the USA. The U-14 and U-12 teams play their games in the Southern California Developmental Soccer Leagues (SCDSL).
