Carlos Uriel Antuna Romero (born August 21, 1997 in Gómez Palacio , Durango ) is a Mexican football player who has been under contract with the first division club Deportivo Guadalajara since January 1, 2020 .

The winger has been the Mexican national player since June 2019 and has so far won the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup with his home country, where he is called Brujo (magician) .

Club career

Santos Laguna

Uriel Antuna joined the U15 team Santos Lagunas in 2012 and played there successfully for the U17 and U20 over the next few years. With the U20 selection, he won the championship in the 2015/16 season. On August 24, 2016, he made his debut in a 3-3 draw in the cup match against FC Juárez for the first team when he came on in the 83rd minute for Colombian Mauricio Cuero . His debut in the Liga MX was delayed until March 5, 2017 (9th matchday of Clausura) in the 1: 2 away defeat against the UNAM Pumas . These two missions were Antuna's only one this season.

FC Groningen

On July 12, 2017, City Football Group acquired the young Mexican's transfer rights. On the same day, he signed a four-year contract with the English first division club Manchester City . On August 8, he joined the Dutch club FC Groningen on loan for two years . He made his debut at the honorary division on September 10 (4th matchday) in a 1-1 draw against VVV Venlo when he was substituted on for Oussama Idrissi in the 56th minute . In his first season 2017/18 he did not make it beyond the status of a rotation player and played only 11 league games. For the reserve team he scored three goals in 14 games.

In the following season 2018/19 he did not make a breakthrough in the starting lineup, which is why the loan business was already closed in January 2019. Until then, he had been used in nine league games of the Green-White Army in which he failed to score.

LA Galaxy

On 29 January 2019 he moved to a lending transaction for MLS - franchise LA Galaxy , where he developed the entire game in 2019 should spend. He made his league debut on March 3 (1st matchday) in a 2-1 home win against the Chicago Fire . On March 17 (3rd matchday) he prepared two goals in a 3-2 home win over Minnesota United . He scored his first goal for the Galaxy on April 29 (matchday 9) in a 2-1 home win over Real Salt Lake . This season he scored six goals and made just as many assists in 33 league games. LA Galaxy failed in the play-offs at Los Angeles FC and Antuna's loan deal ended after this game.

Deportivo Guadalajara

Manchester City extended Antuna's working paper in October 2019 to summer 2022. On November 28, however, it was announced that he would be leaving the Citizens on January 1, 2020 for almost ten million euros for the traditional Mexican club Deportivo Guadalajara , where he was given a two-year contract. He made his league debut on January 12 (1st matchday of Clausura) in a 2-0 home win against FC Juárez , when he came on for Isaac Brizuela in the 68th minute . In the 2020 Clausura , which was canceled prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic , he played nine games in which he made one assist.

National team

Mexico U20

Antuna played for the Mexican U18 national team before taking part in the CONCACAF U20 Championship in Costa Rica in spring 2017 with the U20 . There he was used in all five group games and scored a hat trick in the group game against El Salvador . Following the tournament, he was voted into the best team in the tournament.

In the summer of 2017, he took part in the 2017 U20 World Cup in South Korea with the U20 . There he played all five games until Mexico was eliminated from the competition against eventual world champions England .

Mexico U21

In May 2018 Antuna was called up to the U21 squad for the 2018 Toulon tournament. He played all four tournament games and failed with Mexico in the final in the English selection . After that, the U21 played four test matches until November 2018.

Mexico

Juan Carlos Osorio Antuna nominated for the first time for the Mexican national team in November 2017 . However , he was not taken into account in the friendly matches against Belgium and Poland . He had to wait until May 2019 for the next draft, when the new head coach Gerardo Martino listed him in the preliminary roster for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States . He made his debut on June 6 in a 3-1 friendly win against Venezuela when he came on for Roberto Alvarado in the second half . Although he was initially not included in the final squad, he moved up because of an injury to Jorge Sánchez .

In the first group game of the Gold Cup against Cuba , Antuna was in the starting line-up. He scored a three-pack and set up a goal in the 7-0 win. With this appearance he started in the next two group games and collected another goal and an assist in these. Because of his achievements, he was nicknamed El Brujo (The Magician) by the press . With the El Tri he cleared both Costa Rica and Haiti out of the way in the final round and thus reached the final, where the host USA was waiting. The final game was won 2-1.
