Roberto Carlos Alvarado Hernández (born September 7, 1998 in Irapuato , Guanajuato ) is a Mexican football player who has been under contract with the first division club CD Cruz Azul since July 2018 and has also been a Mexican national player since September 2018 . He is nicknamed El Piojo (The Louse) after his model Claudio López .

He is considered a versatile player who can act both in the attacking midfield as a "tens" and on both sides of the wing .

Club career

Celaya FC

Alvarado was named after the Brazilian singer Roberto Carlos and began his professional career with the Celaya FC team . He made his debut on September 25, 2013 in the cup match against Estudiantes Tecos , which was won 1-0 at the home of Estadio Miguel Alemán Valdés . Just three days later, at the age of 15 years and 21 days, he made his debut in Ascenso MX - the second highest Mexican division - also against the Estudiantes Tecos. In the 0-0 draw, he entered the field in the 86th minute for René García . He became the youngest player to ever play at Ascenso. On February 18, 2014, he met Clausura for the first time for his team in the 1-0 win over Atlas Guadalajara in the group stage of the Copa MX Clausura.

The young Mexican's achievements also aroused interest across the Atlantic . In November 2014, for example, he trained for a while with the English Premier League clubs Manchester United and AFC Sunderland . In January 2015 he auditioned for Leicester City . However, a contract was never concluded and so he stayed with Celaya for the time being. There he got, however, in the next few months, Alvarado only got sporadic playing time and only made it into the starting line-up in the 2015/16 season . He scored his first league goal on April 10, 2016 (14th matchday of Clausura) in a 2-0 home win against Atlético San Luis . During this season he has already played 30 competitive games.

His complete breakthrough in the Mexican second division came in the Apertura of the following season 2016/17 when he scored six goals in 14 appearances. As a result, the eyes of the top Mexican clubs in Liga MX turned to him again.

CF Pachuca

For the Clausura 2017 , the first division club CF Pachuca signed the aspiring midfielder. He made his debut in the top Mexican division on January 15, 2017 (2nd matchday of Clausura) when he came on for Rubén Botta in the 1-0 home win against Chiapas FC in the final phase of the game . He scored his first goal on March 4 in a 3-2 away win against Club Tijuana . In the Clausura he came on nine missions, in which he was on the field in five from the start. In the CONCACAF Champions League 2016/17 it was used twice, but sat in two final games against Tigres UANL on the bench. The tournament was won in two games with an overall result of 2: 1.

Club Necaxa

As part of the acquisition of the Chilean winger Edson Puch , CF Pachuca Alvarado gave up in return for Club Necaxa after only half a year. He made his debut on the seventh matchday and scored the decisive winner in the 2-1 home win against Atlas Guadalajara shortly after being substituted on. He then made it into the regular formation and was already on the pitch in all 17 league games of his club in the 2018 Clausura, in which he scored one goal and prepared five more. With Necaxa he was able to win the 2018 Copa MX Clausura with a 1-0 final win against Deportivo Toluca .

CD Cruz Azul

On May 21, 2018, El Piojo (Die Laus) - as he is also called like his role model Claudio López - switched to league competitor CD Cruz Azul . On July 21 (1st matchday of Apertura) he made his debut in a 3-0 home win against Puebla FC for his new club. Just two weeks later, in a 1-0 home win against Tigres UANL, he scored for the first time wearing the La Maquina jersey, giving his team a perfect start to the season with three wins from three games. After 17 match days, the Apertura 2018 ended in first place in the table. Alvarado had appeared in every game, contributing two goals and four assists. In the Liguilla Apertura they made it to the final game for the championship, but where they lost in the Clásico Joven against Club América both the return game with 0-2. The Apertura of the Copa MX could be won in the final 2-0 against CF Monterrey . In the Clausura 2019 he started in all 17 games, scored two goals and prepared two more. In the Liguillas of the Clausura they failed in the quarterfinals against rivals Club America. In the following, shortened 2019/20 season , Alvarado kept his form and scored four goals in 27 league appearances and prepared six more goals.

National team

Mexico U21

With the Mexican U-21 national team , Alvarado took part in the 46th edition of the Toulon tournament, in which he advanced to the final with his home country. Before that, he had scored once against Qatar and China in the group stage . In the final against England U21 he could not prevent the 1: 2 defeat despite his third tournament goal.

He was also called up to the squad that would represent Mexico in the men's soccer competition of the Central American and Caribbean Games 2018 in Barranquilla , Colombia , but his club CD Cruz Azul refused to approve the offensive player for that tournament.

Mexico

On August 29, 2018, he was called up for the first time in the squad of the Mexican national team as part of the friendly international matches against Uruguay and the United States . He made his debut on September 7th in the 4-1 loss to the Uruguayan selection in Houston , when he came on in the second half for striker Alan Pulido . On June 5, 2019, he scored in his seventh international match in a 3-1 friendly win against Venezuela in Atlanta for the first time for the national team.

At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019 he was in the El Tri squad . He scored his second goal for Mexico in a 3-1 group stage win over Canada . He was on the field from the start in all three group matches, but did not finish a single one. In the 6: 5 quarter-final win against Costa Rica , he was substituted on for Uriel Antuna in the second half and successfully converted his attempt on penalties. In the semi-final win against Haiti , he was again exchanged for Antuna in the middle of the second half of the game. In the final against the USA he was substituted on for Antuna in the closing stages of regular time. The game was ultimately won 1-0 in extra time.
