Clásico Joven ( German  Young Classic ) is the name of the city derby between the Mexico City- based football clubs Club América and Cruz Azul . While the Club América owned by the media giant Televisa is decried as a “bonzenklub” and is more associated with the upper class, the origins of the Club Deportivo Social y Cultural Cruz Azul as a company sports community lie in the cement factory of the same name. Accordingly, the cementeros are traditionally associated with the working class and enjoy the highest levels of sympathy among the poorer sections of the population.

history

In contrast to Club América, founded in 1916, and all other clubs that have so far brought top division football to the capital of Mexico , the origins of Cruz Azul are not in the capital, but in the small town of Jasso (now Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul ) in the state of Hidalgo which is located about 50 km north of Mexico City.

Although the CD Cruz Azul was founded in 1927, it was completely meaningless until the early 1960s. His professional history did not begin until 1961 when he entered the Segunda División , which at that time still held the rank of a second division . Just three years later, Cruz Azul won the championship and the associated promotion to the first division , to which the club has belonged ever since. Five years later, Cruz Azul won the Mexican football championship for the first time in the 1968/69 season , followed by a second place in 1969/70 and another championship title in Torneo México 70. Because the poorly populated town of Jasso with its relatively small Estadio 10 de diciembre did not allow the up-and-coming club to have a high audience potential, the club moved to the capital before the 1971/72 season, thereby entering into direct competition with the local Club America. As if that wasn't enough, Cruz Azul immediately won three more titles in a row at his new place of work (1971/72, 1972/73 and 1973/74). By the 1979/80 season, Cruz Azul had won the championship seven times and was just as successful as the team from Chivas Guadalajara in the period between 1956/57 and 1964/65. Because the game between America and Chivas has been known as Súper Clásico for some time , the duel between the two neighboring clubs has now been called Clásico Joven.

Derby balance sheet

Including the last derby in the 2018 Clausura on March 31, 2018, which America won 2-1, there have been a total of 172 matches between the two teams so far. Club America won 63 of them, while Cruz Azul won 51 derbies in its favor. 58 games ended in a draw.
