The Estadio 10 de diciembre ( German  Stadium of December 10th ) is a football stadium in the Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul , a small town in the Mexican state of Hidalgo . The stadium, which was inaugurated in 1963 and has 17,000 seats, is used by the Cruz Azul Hidalgo football club .

origin of the name

The name of the stadium was chosen in memory of December 10, 1953, when Guillermo Álvarez Macías took over the chairmanship of Cemento Cruz Azul and ushered in a new era in the cement factory. Under him, the company not only made a decisive step towards modernity and productivity, but also in the areas of sports promotion and culture. For years, Álvarez Macías was one of the great drivers behind the Group's own football team, the CD Cruz Azul .

history

The sports field, which is now part of the stadium, was already the home ground of the Cruz Azul team, which played in the second division between 1961 and 1964 . At that place, Cruz Azul managed on January 19, 1964, the last match day of the 1963/64 season, by a 7-1 win against CD Zamora, promotion to the first division , which the club has been a part of ever since. The promotion was made possible by the simultaneous 1: 2 defeat of the previous league leaders Poza Rica FC at Orizaba FC .

To make the area suitable for the first division, the construction of a wooden grandstand began on March 6, 1964, and was completed after four months. On July 12, 1964, the stadium was officially opened with a game against CD Irapuato (3-0).

In the newly opened stadium, the Cementeros also celebrated their first two championship titles (1968/69 and México 70) before they escaped the cramped conditions of the Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul in spring 1971 and played their home games in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City . Nevertheless, the team continued to use the Estadio 10 de diciembre as a training ground for a long time.

As the home ground for league games in professional football , the stadium has been used again since 1994/95, when the newly founded farm team Cruz Azul Hidalgo was given a starting place in the now only third-rate Segunda Division. With the championship won at the end of the same season, the team was promoted to the second-rate Primera División 'A' , to which the farm team has belonged as continuously as the Liga de Ascenso , which was newly created before the 2009/10 season and has since been the second division in Mexican football is. Only in the years between 2003 and 2006, when the farm team was transferred to Oaxaca and competed there under the name Cruz Azul Oaxaca , no second division games took place at the Estadio 10 de Diciembre.

The stadium also serves as the home ground for farm teams playing in lower leagues, such as Cruz Azul Jasso , the champion of the Segunda División in the 2007 Clausura .
