Life, place of residence and family

Schmid began his career as an educator, published on philosophical topics and graduated as Dr. phil . In 1900 he was a senior secondary school teacher in Bautzen and was already active as a journalist. Around 1905 he was a senior teacher at the Realgymnasium in Zwickau and had acquired the title of professor. He turned increasingly to the pedagogy of the natural sciences and psychology and published numerous works, magazines, didactic course instructions for both teachers and students. As a geologist, he published a textbook on geology around 1905.

However, Schmid was more well-known as an animal psychologist and the author of numerous popular science books on animals that deal primarily with instinct, behavior and the possible psychological life of animals. Some books had multiple editions and continued to be reprinted after his death. He was also the editor of several scientific journals, such as Natur, the journal of the German Natural Science Society, as well as book series and author of scientific articles in specialist journals and academic textbooks.

Bastian Schmid's villa in Solln, where he kept wild animals for his research

Probably before 1903, he bought the villa of the court opera singer Kaspar Bausewein , built in the style of the German neo-renaissance , at Natalienstrasse (today Buchauerstrasse) 20 in Munich-Solln after his farewell to the opera and moving to Tegernsee. Schmid, however, did not live in Munich until around 1919. In the garden property that was still undeveloped at the time, he kept over 500 animals, u. a. Monkeys, anteaters, jackdaws, storks, wolves and lambs. After his death, his daughter, the choreographer Senta Maria , added a ballet school with a studio stage to the house around 1958, which was later demolished. Bastian Schmid is at the Solln cemetery together with his wife Friederike, geb. Hörburger (1872–1942) and his daughter are buried in the family grave. In 1953, Bastian-Schmid-Platz in Solln was named after him.
