Petroleros de Poza Rica

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Petroleros de Poza Rica FC is a football club from the city of Poza Rica de Hidalgo in the Mexican state of Veracruz .

The club, founded in 1960, is one of the most traditional clubs in what is now the four-class Tercera División , in which its first team plays its home games at the Estadio Heriberto Jara Corona .

history

Between 1958 and 1970 the Petroleros were an integral part of the then second-class Segunda División and were even close to being promoted to the Primera División in 1963/64 .

Before the last match day, the Petroleros led the table, but lost their last game 1: 2 against Orizaba FC , while at the same time their previous rival Cruz Azul took over the standings with a 7-1 win against CD Zamora and in turn rose managed.

Because the first division was expanded from 14 to 16 teams in the coming 1964/65 season, an additional promotion round was held in Mexico City , for which four teams had qualified, each of which competed once against each other in a round-robin tournament . In addition to Poza Rica, the current runner-up in the Segunda División, and the bottom of the table in the previous first division season, Nacional de Guadalajara , CD Veracruz and CF Ciudad Madero took part. The regulations stipulated that the two first-placed teams would play first-class and the third and fourth-placed teams second-class in the coming season. Although Poza Rica won its first game 6-1 against Ciudad Madero and was top of the table after the first matchday, the Petroleros lost their two following games against Veracruz (2-3) and Nacional (1-2), which gave them the last place in the promotion round and the remaining in the second division brought in. In this way, Poza Rica has gambled away the historic chance to play in the first division twice in one season.

In the following years the sport gradually went downhill and in 1970 there was a descent to the Tercera División, which was still third class at the time. It was not until twelve years later that the championship and the associated return to the Segunda División, in which the Petroleros were represented again between 1982 and 1986, succeeded. After the 1985/86 season, the club sold its license and has never played second class since then.
