El Súper Clásico del Fútbol Mexicano (Eng. The super classic of Mexican football ) is the meeting between the Club América from the state capital Mexico City and the Club Deportivo Guadalajara from Guadalajara , the second largest city in Mexico and the capital of the state of Jalisco .

history

The CD Guadalajara developed into the first serial champion of the Mexican professional league, which he won a total of seven times in the nine years between 1957 and 1965. The four title wins in a row, which were achieved between 1959 and 1962, are still a record in the top Mexican division. Those in charge and fans of Chivas have always been particularly proud of the fact that these great successes were achieved by a team that consisted exclusively of Mexican players, while the competition had more or less strengthened itself with foreign players. The most prosperous club has been the capital club América since the 1960s, which could afford to sign a number of expensive players from South America (especially Argentina ). When the great days of CD Guadalajara ended with the seventh title win in 1965 and Club America won the championship for the first time in the following season 1965/66, the pre-existing aversion of the two rivals was reinforced. From now on, their meeting in Mexico was seen as a duel between the “best Mexicans” and the “best foreigners”.

At Súper Clásico the emotions sometimes boil so high that there have already been multiple mass brawls between the two teams. For example, on May 22, 1983 in the semi-final second leg for the championship. After America won the first leg at the Estadio Jalisco 2-1, they then went down 3-0 at their home Aztec stadium. The surprising turn led to a mass riot. Similar scenes were repeated three years later in a league game on August 17, 1986. More recently, both teams got caught after a bad foul by the América player Jean Beausejour on April 4, 2010 in the very last Súper Clásico at the Estadio Jalisco (shortly afterwards Chivas moved to the Estadio Omnilife) together.

Player records in the Clásicos

The encounter between the two clubs overshadows all other games of the highest Mexican professional league introduced in the 1943/44 season . In addition to the fact that both clubs are joint record winners of the Mexican professional league with eleven titles each, both are also the only clubs that have always been represented in the football club since the beginning. So there has been a direct confrontation between the two clubs in every season - with the exception of the two special tournaments México 70 and México 86 , when the schedule did not provide for it.

Records

The biggest win in Súper Clásico was a 7-0 win by Guadalajara in the home game of the 1956/57 season. América's highest home win dates from the opening season of the professional league 1943/44 and was a 7-2. The derby with the highest number of goals took place in Parque Asturias in 1945/46 and was won by Guadalajara 6-4. America's biggest away win was 4-0 in 2013/14 and Chivas 4-1 in 1969/70 and 3-0 in 2016/17.

The longest winning streak spanned five victories, which Guadalajara won twice (between August 20, 1945 and September 21, 1947 and again between November 12, 1959 and November 29, 1961) and America once (between February 4, 1947) 1971 and November 19, 1972).

Guadalajara remained undefeated the longest at home from the introduction of the professional league to November 6, 1955, when Club América only achieved their first victory at their 13th guest appearance in Guadalajara. Of the previous twelve games, Chivas was able to win nine and three ended in a draw. A similar long series of successes in their own place was able to achieve Chivas between September 11, 1983 and September 5, 1993, when the team remained undefeated in eleven consecutive home games, with only three wins during this period. The longest winning streak in their own place was achieved between February 26, 2006 and April 10, 2011, when Guadalajara won six times in a row and even went five times without conceding. The longest losing streak in its own place Guadalajara had to accept between June 5, 1971 and October 14, 1979, when the Chivasi could not win a single of their ten home games in the 1970s (four defeats and six draws).

Guadalajara's only win in the 1970s was a 1-0 win at Mexico City's Aztec Stadium on October 21, 1973, which was followed by an amazing Americanistas home series . Because with the 2: 2 on October 13, 1974 began a series of 21 home games (10 wins, 11 draws), which the Aguilas remained unbeaten in their own place, before Guadalajara only on February 18, 1996 with a 3-2 win of the next away win succeeded. This period also included the longest streak of victories, when America scored four consecutive home wins between August 18, 1985 and April 30, 1989. America remained the longest without a home win in the seven home games between November 30, 1958 and October 4, 1964. During the same period (between November 30, 1958 and August 3, 1961) the longest series of defeats took place on their own pitch, when four home games were lost in a row. America have never won more than two away games in a row against their biggest rivals.

All superclásicos in the Liguillas

So far, the two arch-rivals have met a total of twelve times in the Liguillas , which were played in two cases in the form of a group stage and otherwise in the knockout system . In the first comparison, which took place in the context of a group stage, both teams failed, as they each won away in a direct comparison. Otherwise, America prevailed eight times, while Guadalajara could only win two comparisons. The simple rule was that America always got the upper hand as soon as they scored a goal in their home Aztec stadium. If they failed to score at home, they also failed in the tournament. It is also noticeable that Guadalajara could not benefit from the home advantage in the Liguillas. Both away and at home, the Chivasi only get two wins in twelve games.

Private games

Of the 33 private games between the two rivals, only ten took place in Mexico City (six) and Guadalajara (four), all of which were played in private tournaments. All four test matches in the 1950s and 1960s took place in other Mexican stadiums and since 1977 a total of 19 games have been played in the United States to give fans of both teams who live there the opportunity to see their favorites live. The most frequent venue with eight encounters was the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles , where the largest Mexican community in the USA lives.

Players who were under contract with both clubs

Javier Aguirre began his professional career at Club América and finished it at Club Guadalajara.
Maza Rodríguez is the only player to date to become champions with both teams.

A number of players wore the shirts of both clubs. Below are just a few of the best known.

It started (at least during the professional era) with the Guadalajara-born goalkeeper Salvador Mota , who played for America from 1942 to 1944 and was under contract with the representative of his hometown for the next three years, before he was still in the service of the then most of his career spent in the capital-based Club Atlante .

Another goalkeeper who was also born in Guadalajara and who played for both clubs was long-time national goalkeeper Oswaldo Sánchez . He made his debut with his hometown club Atlas before moving to America in 1996 and from there in 1999 to Chivas, the main rival of his two previous clubs.

The long-time national player and later national coach Javier Aguirre acted as a key player in both clubs . Born in the capital, he went through the junior division of the Club América, for which he completed his first professional station between 1979 and 1984. Between 1987 and 1993 he was under contract with Guadalajara, where he also ended his playing career.

Another talent from the Americanistas' offspring was former striker Carlos Hermosillo . He was initially under contract from 1994 to 1998 and later again in the 1999/00 season with America and ended his active career in 2001 in the service of Chivas.

The Guadalajara-born Joel Sánchez Ramos went the opposite way. Trained at Chivas, he began his professional career there in 1995. In 1999 he moved to Club America, of all places, but returned in 2001 with the words "I am a Chiva and will always be".

Ramón Ramírez , national player with 122 international appearances , was under contract with Chivas from 1994 to 1998 and again between 2002 and 2004. Its sale to América following the first stage had deeply shocked the Chivas fan base. But his stay at America was not comparable to his great time at Chivas and so after only one half season (Verano 99) he moved to the UANL Tigres and later back to Chivas.

The current sports director of Club América, Ricardo Peláez , not only played for the Americanistas (from 1985 to 1987 and again in the 1997/98 season), but also let his active career end between 1998 and 2000 at Chivas.

The "hero of the 1997 finals", Gustavo Nápoles , who contributed four goals to the 6-1 win against Toros Neza , not only played a total of five years for Chivas between 1995 and 2002, but also a half-season (1999) for America in between .

Most recently, in January 2013, national player Francisco "Maza" Rodríguez moved to America after his positions at PSV Eindhoven and VfB Stuttgart , after spending the first six years as a professional with CD Guadalajara. He was the first player to win the championship with both clubs.
