Pentagonales Internacionales

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pentagonales Internacionales were football tournaments organized by the Mexican Football Association to give local teams the opportunity to compete with foreign teams under so-called competitive conditions. The tournaments have their origins in Mexico City and were held early on in the country's second largest city, Guadalajara . They were always played with five teams (hence the name Pentagonales, which translated means five-way tournaments ), three of which came from Mexico and two from abroad. Only at the second tournament in 1961 and the last tournament in Mexico City in 1970 and at the 1963 tournament in Guadalajara only two Mexican and three foreign teams took part.

The tournaments in Mexico City

The first tournament of this kind was held in Mexico City in 1957 and was still a Cuadrangular Internacional , i.e. an international four-way tournament . The Mexican teams from Atlante and Guadalajara took part, the Racing Club from Argentina and Peñarol Montevideo from Uruguay were invited as international guests . The winner of the competition was Peñarol.

In 1958 the first real Pentagonal Internacional took place. Chivas Guadalajara was the only participant in this tournament who had already taken part in the four-way tournament initiated last year. The advantage of having already gained experience in this competition finally paid off; because the team from Guadalajara, which matured into a top team, to a campeonisímo , won the tournament. The other participants were Toluca and Zacatepec from Mexico as well as Botafogo from Brazil and River Plate from Argentina.

After Santos from Brazil and Toluca from Mexico won the tournaments in 1959 and 1960, respectively, Guadalajara was successful again at the opening tournament in 1961. In total there were three of these competitions in 1961, two in Mexico City and one in Guadalajara, more than in any other year.

The other tournament in Mexico City was won by FC Santos and only clubs from Brazil were successful in the following two years: Botafogo won in 1962 and Vasco da Gama entered the list of winners in 1963.

Between 1964 and 1968 Hexagonales Internacionales , so - called six- tournament tournaments, were held. But now it was no longer a pure club tournament. For example, the GDR national team took part in 1966 and there were also various “selection teams” such as those from Moscow (1964) or Mexico (several times in later years). In 1970 they returned to the tried and tested five-a-side tournament, but the downfall of the tournament, which used to be so popular, could no longer be stopped.

Below are the traditional final tables of the tournaments of Mexico City:

Presumably, the goals were divided by the goals conceded to determine the winner, which corresponded to a ratio of 2.00 for Atlas and 1.57 for Sparta. But the tournament victory of Atlas is acc. RSSSF.com questionable.

The tournaments in Guadalajara

Ticket to the inauguration of the Estadio Jalisco

In 1959, the international tournaments previously held exclusively in the Estadio Ciudad Universitaria in Mexico City were copied and also played in Guadalajara. The first tournament, like in Mexico City in 1957, was a Cuadrangular Internacional , an international four-way tournament that was won by Palmeiras São Paulo .

With the opening of the Estadio Jalisco in January 1960 it became a five-way tournament, which in Guadalajara was officially called Torneo Pentagonal de Occidente (five-way tournament of the west). At the first tournament of this kind in Guadalajara, the three clubs involved in the construction of the stadium, Chivas Guadalajara , Atlas and Oro as hosts, and San Lorenzo from Argentina and São Paulo FC from Brazil as guests, took part. The winner was the team of São Paulo FC.

The tournament in Guadalajara continued regularly from 1961 to 1963, but then obviously came to a standstill. The 1962 tournament was won by Chivas Guadalajara . In 1961, FC Santos had been successful and in 1963 SE Palmeiras from São Paulo .

Anecdotes

Due to the incomplete data on these events (the winner of 1966 cannot be determined with certainty and there may have been other tournaments of this type that are unknown to posterity), the following information is based solely on the data available and therefore cannot claim Raise completeness.

The foreign participants

Foreign top teams were always welcome guests and their participation was the real motivation for organizing these tournaments. The main attraction was certainly the FC Santos with Pelé , who has demonstrably participated four times (1959 and in all three tournaments in 1961) and entered the list of winners three times. Only in the first tournament in 1961 was Santos surprisingly defeated 3: 4 in a high-class game against the Mexican representative Necaxa and because the next game against Chivas Guadalajara they couldn't go beyond 0-0, Chivas secured one point in the final score Lead over the second Santos the tournament victory.

Basically, Brazilian teams were particularly welcome and with the exception of the tournaments in 1957 and 1967 in Mexico City, at least one Brazilian team was always represented. In addition to Santos, the team from Botafogo took part four times, winning two tournaments (1962 and 1968).

In the early years, with the exception of Dukla Prague in 1959, all of the guest teams came exclusively from South America . From 1962, European teams also took part regularly, although their participation was generally limited to Eastern Europe.

Only in 1967 was the otherwise usual field of participants turned upside down. In this competition, neither a Brazilian (as usual) or other South American or Eastern European (as has been common since 1962) teams took part, but only the teams from Western Europe , which were always missing in the other tournaments, as guests: Espanyol Barcelona , FC Bologna and Sheffield Wednesday .

The local crowd pullers

The big crowd puller among the Mexican teams was undisputedly the Chivas Guadalajara team , which also dominated the domestic Primera División in those years , which played in almost every tournament up to and including 1966 - and which won Mexican club football with three tournaments (1958, 1961 and 1962 ) also represented worthily. While Chivas only took part in three (of a total of five known) tournaments in his hometown of Guadalajara (where local rival Atlas was the only club to take part in all events), Chivas was the most frequently represented team in Mexico City and was the number one participant in ten even the mighty capital city club America with only seven participations in the shadows. Oro was there at least six times (three times each in Guadalajara and Mexico City) and five times Toluca (each in Mexico City and winner in 1960). Atlas probably only participated in one tournament in Mexico City (1966), but it appears to have won it. There was also a Mexican selection team that won the tournament in 1967. No other Mexican winners of these events are known.

Tours of foreign football clubs

In addition to the tournaments described above, there have been a number of private trips to Mexico by foreign clubs. It all started with today's Chilean record champions CSD Colo-Colo in February 1927. The first of a total of six games was played against Club Necaxa on February 12, 1927 and Colo-Colo won 3-0. With the exception of the two encounters against the "Spanish clubs" España (0: 1) and Asturias (1: 1), the Chileans won the remaining games. In the same year, the Uruguayan top club Nacional Montevideo (five games in June and July) and the first European club Real Madrid (six games in September) toured the country of the Aztecs and won all the games.

In the years that followed, various associations made trips to Mexico. In addition to a large number of South American teams, there were also European clubs, such as the Hungarian teams of Haladás Szombathely (seven games in January and February 1929) and MTK Budapest (six games in June and July 1930) as well as the Spanish teams of Racing Club Madrid (seven games in September and October 1931), Athletic Bilbao (five games in July and August 1935) and FC Barcelona (nine games from June to August 1937).

While all games by foreign guests up until then were played exclusively against teams from the capital, a first comparison between the Selección Jalisco and Estudiantes de La Plata (2-4) took place on February 6, 1941 . On an extensive trip by CA San Lorenzo de Almagro in January and February 1942, there were three comparisons with the Selección Jalisco, all of which were won by the guest from Argentina (1: 0, 9: 1 and 3: 1). On the same tour, on February 18, 1942, the CD Irapuato was the first club team outside of Mexico City to compete in an international competition, but with 0:12 it also suffered the clearest defeat in such a comparison. The next guest, the Costa Rican representative CS La Libertad , completed a comparison against a "provincial club" on March 15, 1942, when he won 3-2 against the UD Moctezuma , an association of the Moctezuma brewery in Orizaba .

Then it was not until 1947 before a foreign club, the Racing Club de Avellaneda , toured Mexico again and - after professional football had also been introduced in Mexico - dealt with four teams that were not based in the capital. The first encounter took place on January 5, 1947 against the CD Veracruz and was won 2-1 by the Mexicans. The Racing Club then defeated the Guadalajara- based clubs CF Atlas (3: 1) and CD Guadalajara (3: 2) and drew from Puebla FC (2: 2).

In the 1950s, teams from German-speaking countries came to Mexico for the first time. VfB Stuttgart made the start in the summer of 1951. Austria Wien , Hannover 96 and Eintracht Frankfurt followed later .

The following overview lists all known foreign tours by German-speaking teams in Mexico, whereby the results are always listed from the perspective of the visiting club.

  19. The representation of the opponent follows the statistics of the Mexican RSSSF archivist Erik Francisco Lugo, while at eintracht-archiv.de (see: Match overview season 1968/69) an opponent named AC San Luis Potosí is mentioned. This would have to have been about the later San Luis FC, which at that time was not represented in the first division, which makes an encounter and a 4-1 victory seem unlikely.
