Career

Career start at home

Gordon Wild was born on October 16, 1995 in the city of Leonberg in Baden-Württemberg as the son of Johnny Meyer and Irene Wild and grew up with his brother Rene. At a young age, he made the leap from Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde to the junior division of 1. FSV Mainz 05, where he went through all divisions until 2013. The right-footer was most recently active in the season 2012/13 in the season south / south-west of the A-Junioren-Bundesliga and made 14 for him personally goalless championship appearances in this. Subsequently, Wild moved to the youth of SV Wehen Wiesbaden in the summer of 2013 and was used by coach Christian Hock in the A-Juniors-Hessenliga , where he was considered a dangerous attacking force. In a total of 17 league appearances in the 2013/14 season, Wild scored twelve goals and was used in the last game of the season in the amateur team of Wehen Wiesbaden in the Hessen League, which was trained by Thomas Brendel . In 2014/15 Wild, who visited the IGS Mainz-Bretzenheim during his time in Mainz , also primarily played in the club's own youth team, but also made four other appearances in the Hessenliga 2014/15 . After SV Wehen Wiesbaden withdrew its second team at the end of the season due to internal structural changes in the junior division, Wild made a move to the United States .

College soccer in the United States

In 2015 he moved to the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina , where he was active in the men's soccer team of the university sports department USC Upstate Spartans . On August 28, 2015, he made his team debut in the game against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs , in the team interspersed with several Germans. In addition to him, Leon Schwarzer, Heiko Allmendinger, Marvin Schön and Lukas Sommer, among others, played in this season. Already from his second outing, a 7-0 victory in the away game against Presbyterian College on September 5th, Wild acted as extremely dangerous and contributed four goals in this encounter. He then came under long-time coach Greg Hooks in 13 other championship games to use and brought it in his first year in 15 missions on 16 goals and two assists. His twelve goals after the first six league games were exemplary of his goal danger. This year the team made it to the Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Tournament for the first time and, after narrow victories over Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast, reached the final, where the team was clearly defeated by North Florida 7-0. Because of his performance, Wild was chosen A-Sun -Freshman-of-the-Year and was part of the A-Sun-All-Conference-Team and the A-Sun-All-Freshman-Team . He was also a four-time A Sun Player of the Week ; USC Upstate achieved this success for the first time since 1995 and for the second time since the league was founded. Furthermore, the German offensive player was in the NSCAA -All-Southeast-Region-First-Team , as well as in the Top-Drawer-Soccer -All-American-Freshman-Team and became the Hero-Sports-Division-I-Men's-Soccer-Rookie -of-the-year chosen. Other honors that Wild received this year included the election for College Soccer News -All-Freshman-American-First-Team , as well as the election for National Player-of-the-Week for College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer and triple election to the National Team of the Week from College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer. In the category goals , goals per game , shots on goal , total shots and points per game , he led the nation in first place.

After his successful freshman year, Wild was wooed by universities with more successful soccer programs and subsequently decided to study at the University of Maryland, College Park , which has one of the best college soccer teams in the United States, the Maryland Terrapins have spawned numerous later professional players. As the only German in the squad, he won the Big Ten Conference Men's Soccer 2016 with the team and, after victories over Michigan , Michigan State and Wisconsin in the Big Ten Conference Men's Soccer Tournament 2016, made it into the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship 2016 . In this, however, was already after the first game, the second round match against the Providence Friars , the end of the line when they lost 4-5. This was also the only defeat that the Terrapins had to accept in this game year; the statistics after 21 games were: 18 wins, two draws and one defeat. Wild was involved in all 21 games and came on 17 goals, making him the most goals for his team in a game year since Patrick Mullins' active college days . In addition to being voted Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week twice , Wild was also named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and was among the top 3 players in the United States in the goals and points categories this year. In addition, the offensive player was elected to the All-Big-Ten-First-Team and the Big-Ten-Tournament-Most-Valuable-Offensive-Player and was one of three finalists to receive the Hermann Trophy , which is given every year to the best college Soccer player is awarded.

In his following junior year, his scoring risk decreased, scoring five hits and two assists in 19 championship appearances, of which he was on the lawn from the start in 18. This year, Johannes Bergmann, a former German junior international who had already made his professional debut in Germany but was only used in the amateur field, joined the Maryland Terrapins. After a mediocre performance in the Big Ten Conference Men's Soccer 2017 , Maryland dropped out of the Big Ten Conference Men's Soccer Tournament 2017 early in the quarterfinals against Wisconsin. In the subsequent NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship 2017, the team also lost early; in this case in the first game of the Regional 4 on penalties against the Albany Great Danes . In the preseason Wild was on the Hermann Trophy Watch List and was a Big Ten Player-to-Watch .

First jobs as a professional

In early 2018, Wild announced early retirement from university to pursue a professional career as a football player. A few weeks earlier, his team-mate Eryk Williamson announced his premature retirement to professional football a year before completing his studies. Subsequently, he signed a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer and was entitled to participate in the MLS SuperDraft 2018 . After taking part in the MLS Combine , the German was drafted as the 37th pick in the second round for the MLS franchise Atlanta United . Shortly thereafter, it was decided to lend Wild to Charleston Battery in the second-rate United Soccer League (USL). The loan deal includes the option to get Wild back immediately should it be needed at Atlanta United. Wild then made his professional debut on March 17, 2018 in a 0-1 home defeat against FC Cincinnati , when coach Michael Anhaeuser sent him onto the pitch in the 80th minute in exchange for Nico Rittmeyer . Then Anhaeuser used him mainly as a regular on the offensive, with Wild scoring his first goal in his fifth league appearance. Ironically, in the 3-0 away win over Atlanta United 2 , Wild scored the goals in minutes 51 and 85 to take them 2-0 and 3-0. By the end of the season, Wild was used in 32 championship games and scored seven goals. With the team he made it to fourth place in the Eastern Conference and thus into the championship-winning play-offs, in which the team lost 1-0 to the New York Red Bulls II in the first round and were therefore eliminated early.

After returning to his franchise, Wild was placed on the waiver list on July 17, 2019. Instead, the franchise signed Mo Adams from Chicago Fire, including a payment of $ 100,000 in general allocation money . Just a week later, Wild was signed to the MLS franchise DC United . The strong left-footer made his debut immediately afterwards in a friendly against Olympique Marseille and was soon awarded to DC United's reserve team, Loudoun United , who were represented in the USL Championship . There Wild, who was unused on the bench in two MLS games by DC United at the end of August 2019, played extremely aggressively and has already scored ten goals in 16 league appearances and prepared another three for his teammates. On September 25, 2019, he scored the first hat-trick in Loudoun United's young history in a 4-1 win over Swope Park Rangers .
