Eric López (born March 5, 1999 in Westminster , California ) is an American football player in the position of goalkeeper .

Club career

Eric López was born on March 5, 1999 in the city of Westminster, California. In 2012 he was accepted at the academy of the major league soccer franchise LA Galaxy . From then on he was used for these in the various academy teams (from U-13) and was therefore also recommended for the US U-14 and U-15 national selections, in which he was subsequently used regularly. At the beginning of November 2014, the MLS franchise announced that it had signed López for his farm team LA Galaxy II with games in the then third-class North American professional league United Soccer League (USL). At the time, López was the youngest player with a professional contract in the history of the USL, at 15 years and eight months. Furthermore, he was only the second player in the still young history of Los Dos , the nickname of LA Galaxy II, who made the leap from the academy to the Los Dos farm team . Under the local coach Curt Onalfo , he was not yet used in the 2015 game year , but mostly stayed in the academy, where he mostly alternated in the U-15 / U-16 and U-17 / U-18 teams came. In addition, he has also gained training experience with the first team from Major League Soccer in recent years.

In the following game year 2016 , López made his competitive debut for LA Galaxy II on August 20, when he was substituted on for the injured Bennett Sneddon in the 2-0 away loss to the Orange County Blues in the 20th minute of the game . He spent the remainder of the season mainly in the academy teams and in the US junior national teams. Under Mike Muñoz , who took over the coaching position at Los Dos in the beginning of 2017, he came to more regular appearances in the USL from May 2017, but often switched with the four other goalkeepers this game year ( Jon Kempin , Bennett Sneddon, Justin Vom Steeg and Clément Diop ). At the end of the 2017 game year, he was ranked 13th in the Western Conference with LA Galaxy II . He also completed a large part of the season in the U-17 / U-18 team of the LA Galaxy Academy , for which he made 23 competitive appearances this season (20 + 3). On June 4, 2017, he sat on the bench of the MLS team of LA Galaxy for the first time in the league game against DC United , but was not used in the further course of the game.

National team career

Shortly after his admission to the academy of the MLS franchise LA Galaxy, López was brought in for the US U-14 selection. From this time on he was not only used against club teams from his age group, but was also used by U-14 national coach Hugo Pérez in official international matches against nations such as Croatia and Slovenia . From the same year he came to missions for the U-15 selection of the United States and belonged to this until the following summer. Shortly before the end of his U-15 career, Richie Williams brought him to the US U-17 juniors in July 2014 . Under Luchi Gonzalez , a coach at the academy of FC Dallas , he took part with a US U-16 selection in the Aegean Cup , a youth football tournament in Turkey . Two months later he took part in a U-16 selection coached by Shaun Tsakiris and Luchi Gonzalez at another youth tournament in the Netherlands . After numerous appearances for the U-17 national team in his home country between 2014 and 2015, the young goalkeeper was brought into the U-18 team of the USA for the first time in July 2015 during the Nordic Cup by Javier Perez . In this he came to regular assignments, especially from the following year 2016, and was part of the youth team trained by the new coach Omid Namazi until the beginning of 2017.
