Earnest "Earnie" Stewart (born March 28, 1969 in Veghel , Netherlands ) is an American - Dutch football player . He played from 1990 to 2004 as a midfielder in the USA national team .

biography

Stewart, a son of the African-American soldier Earnie Stewart and his Dutch wife Annemien, was born and raised in the Netherlands. He began his active career in 1988 with VVV Venlo and switched to Willem II Tilburg in 1990 . In late 1990 he had his first game for the US national soccer team against Portugal .

In his first season with Willem II, he was the third best scorer in the Eerste Divisie with 17 goals . 49 goals followed in six years. In the meantime he has developed into a regular player for the US national team and played all four FIFA World Cup games from the start in 1994 . In the game against Colombia he scored the winning goal to make it 2-1.

From 1996 Stewart played for six seasons at NAC Breda . The club was relegated to the second division in 1999 and rose again in 2000. While at NAC, he played in all of the US team's games at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups .

In January 2003 he left the Netherlands to play in Major League Soccer . He was named as a result of the Entry Draft D.C. United , with whom he won the MLS Cup in its sophomore season. He scored four goals in the regular season and one playoff goal and left DC after the 2004 season. He returned to VVV Venlo, where he became technical director in 2005 after retiring from professional sport.

Stewart is one of eight US players who made his 100th international game at the 2004 World Cup (qualifier against Grenada). His 111 professional goals in the Netherlands make him the best American goalscorer in international club matches. He was named US Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2001.

On May 14, 2006 he became Technical Director at NAC Breda. Since June 2010 he has been Technical Director at AZ Alkmaar .
