Dârjiu ( German Ders or Därsch , Hungarian Székelyderzs or Derzs ) is a municipality in the Harghita district in Transylvania , Romania . The village of Mujna also belongs to it .
population
In 1992 the place had 847 inhabitants in the narrower sense (mainly Hungarians / Szekler), some of whom belong to the Catholic, partly to the Unitarian faith.
Attractions
The place is the site of a fortified church , which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 1999 . The fortified church belongs to the Szekler fortified churches and was built around the 13th or 14th century. In the 15th century, the fortified church was enlarged in the late Gothic style and received the shape that has been preserved to this day.
The building belongs to the Unitarian Church of Transylvania . Unitarianism in Transylvania was recognized since the Diet of Medgyes / Mediasch in 1583. The first bishop was Franz Davidis , a Transylvanian Saxon .
The Gothic frescoes date from the area's Catholic times and were discovered in the 19th century. The theme of the frescoes is the Ladislaus legend (Cuman invasion of Hungary). Duke Ladislaus I (cousin of King Solomon) fought together with King Solomon (1063-1074) against the invading Cumans .
Other important Gothic frescos in Transylvania are in Ghelința ( Gelence in Hungarian ) and in Mălâncrav ( Malmkrog in German ).
