The Georgi Asparuhov Stadium ( Bulgarian Стадион "Георги Аспарухов" ; through sponsorship officially Vivacom Arena - Georgi Asparuhov Stadium , Bulgarian Виваком Арена - Стадион "Георги Аспарухов" ) is a football stadium in the Bulgarian capital Sofia . It is the sporting home of the Levski Sofia football club .

Surname

The facility is named after the Bulgarian soccer player Georgi Asparukhov , who was killed in a car accident in 1971. Originally it was called Gerena Stadium ( Bulgarian Стадион Герена ). This name is still widely used, especially among older followers. The stadium has been called Vivacom Arena - Georgi Asparuchow Stadium since 2017 and is named after the Vivacom brand of the Bulgarian telecommunications company EAD. The contract runs for six years.

history

The facility, which opened in 1963, is used by Levski Sofia as the venue for his home games. Since the last renovation in 1999, it has seated 29,200 spectators. The playing area is 105 by 68 meters, the strength of the floodlights 1500 lux . The complex offers the only artificial turf field in Bulgaria as a training opportunity .

New building

Levski Sofia is aiming to build a new stadium to replace the Georgi Asparukhov Stadium. The first construction phase is to be completed for the 100th anniversary of the association in 2014. The new stadium with 28,000 seats is to be built in two further construction phases by 2017. During the construction work, Levski Sofia moves to the Vasil Levski National Stadium . At the beginning of February 2013, construction of the stadium began with the demolition of the main stand. On July 5, 2013 the foundation stone for the new arena was laid. After the demolition in early 2013 and the clearance work, work began on the construction of the new main grandstand with 6,000 seats.
