Paulo Assunção da Silva (born January 25, 1980 in Várzea Grande ) is a former Brazilian soccer player . In addition to the Brazilian citizenship, he also has the Portuguese .
Club career
Paulo Assunção moved in January 2001 from the traditional Brazilian club Palmeiras São Paulo to the Portuguese record champions FC Porto . At Porto he then played as a regular in the second team, but then went back to his home club in Brazil. Another year later, the midfielder came back to Portugal and hired at Nacional Funchal , where he played 50 league games in two years. He made his debut in the first division on January 26, 2003 against Vitória Guimarães . In 2004 Assunção went back to FC Porto, but was awarded to the eleven-time Greek champions AEK Athens for a year shortly after the move . In 2006, 2007 and 2008 he was champion with Porto and in 2006 he was also a cup winner and also a super cup winner . According to a clause in his contract, his former club CD Nacional and FC Porto each had 50 percent of the transfer rights to the midfielder.
Assunção was one of the first players to leave their club after the so-called Webster judgment and Article 17 of the FIFA regulations. When he moved to Atlético Madrid in July 2008, he still had to pay the outstanding salary of 600,000 euros and there was no transfer fee for the Spaniards. The Brazilian achieved the greatest successes of his career to date with Madrid, winning the UEFA Europa League in 2010 and 2012 . After winning the second title, he moved back to his home country for São Paulo in July 2012 . There he played until the end of the year and won the Copa Sudamericana with the club .
From January 2013 to the end of the year, the midfielder played for the Spanish first division promoted Deportivo La Coruña . However, he only came to 9 missions. In 2014 he moved to the Greek club Levadiakos, where he did not have any playing time. Then Assunção ended his active career.
