Brede Paulsen Hangeland (born June 20, 1981 in Houston , Texas , United States ) is a former Norwegian soccer player .
Career
The 1.95 m tall central defender began his career at FK Vidar , for whom he played until 2000. In January of this year, Viking Stavanger , one of the country's top clubs , signed him . Here he was deployed in the defense center for over five years. His achievements first drew the attention of some regional clubs and especially the Danish record champions FC Copenhagen to him. Ultimately, he was signed by the Danes for an unknown transfer fee . With his new club he took part in the UEFA Champions League , but where he finished last in the group behind Manchester United , Benfica Lisbon and Celtic Glasgow . He was in all six preliminary round games, but could not prevent the defeats of his club. He scored his only goal for Copenhagen in the Champions League qualification against Ajax Amsterdam from the Netherlands . So far Hangeland has won one title, namely the national championship with FC Copenhagen. Since January 2008 he has been playing for Fulham FC . With the Cottagers he reached the final of the 2009/10 Europa League . In June 2014, the contract with Hangeland, which ran until 2015, was terminated. He then moved to Crystal Palace for a year . In August 2016, he announced his retirement as an active player.
In addition, Hangeland was one of the regulars in the Norwegian national team. He played 91 international matches, in which he was also used as captain. He was able to score four goals.
In 2010 he was named Footballer of the Year by the Norwegian sports union NISO .
