Jonathan Greening (born January 2, 1979 in Scarborough ) is an English football player .
Club career
York City, Manchester United and Middlesbrough FC
At the age of 17, Greening was inducted into the York City professional squad. The young midfielder played with the Yorkies in the Football League Second Division and quickly attracted attention there. On March 26, 1998 then the English top club Manchester United secured the services of the player. At ManU it was difficult for the offensive player to prevail against the big competition. In the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League final against FC Bayern Munich , Greening was on the bench and was able to celebrate the 2-1 victory from there. However, it was not used in a single match in the competition. In the summer of the same year he extended his contract, but already decided in the summer of 2001 to leave the club. Greening went to Middlesbrough FC for a sum of three million pounds . There he developed into a top performer in the early days and was voted player of the season within his club in the Premier League 2002/03 . In the following year problems arose and greening found itself on the bank more and more often. For this reason, he decided in the summer of 2004 to move again within the league.
West Bromwich Albion
At West Bromwich Albion he found his old strength, became a regular and an undisputed high performer. At the end of the Premier League 2005/06 he was relegated with his new club, but remained loyal to him. In the summer of 2007, the offensive player extended his contract by three years and was named the team's new captain shortly afterwards. At the end of the season, Bromwich secured first place in the 2007/08 Football League Championship and thus promotion to the Premier League . In addition to club mates Paul Robinson and Kevin Phillips , Greening was voted PFA Team of the Year in the second division. At the end of the Premier League 2008/09 , which brought the direct relegation to the second division, Greening refused to extend his contract, which ran until the summer of 2010, and instead asked for a transfer clearance.
Fulham FC
After "WBA" had rejected a purchase offer from Fulham FC , both clubs agreed in August 2009 on a loan deal for the entire 2009/10 season . At the beginning of July 2010, Greening signed a two-year contract.
Nottingham Forest
After he had only come to ten league appearances in the 2010/11 Premier League , he moved to Nottingham Forest on July 18, 2011 and signed a three-year contract. In the course of the first half of the 2012/13 season, Barnsley FC committed the greening, which was no longer considered in Forest, on loan.
National team
Greening made 17 appearances in the English U-21 team . He scored three hits. He was nominated for the U-21 European Football Championship in Switzerland in 2002, but retired with the team after the preliminary round. Greening was only used in the last game in Group A and was replaced by Shola Ameobi in the 31st minute . During the 2002/03 season he was nominated for the senior national team , but was not used.
