← UEFA Champions League 2008/09
|
|
The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu opened in 1947
The 2009/10 UEFA Champions League was the 18th season of the most important European competition for club teams in football under this name and the 55th overall. 76 clubs from 52 regional associations took part in the competition. Only the Liechtenstein Football Association did not provide a representative.
The season began with the first qualifying round on June 30, 2009 and ended with the final at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid on May 22, 2010, for the first time on a Saturday. There Inter Milan beat FC Bayern Munich 2-0 and won the competition for the third time after 1964 and 1965 .
As in the previous season, Argentina's Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona was the top scorer of the competition with eight goals.
qualification
In the draws, the teams were divided into seeded (stronger) and unseeded (weaker) teams according to their club coefficients and drawn among themselves.
First qualifying round
The first legs took place on June 30 and July 1, the second legs on 7/8. July.
Second qualifying round
The first legs took place on 14./15. July, the second leg a week later on 21./22. July 2009.
Third qualifying round
From the third qualifying round onwards there were two separate pots: national champions are only drawn against other national champions, whereas "pursuers", i.e. clubs placed second, third or fourth, are drawn only against other "pursuers".
Losing teams moved to the play-offs of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League .
The game was played on 28./29. July (first leg) and 4th / 5th August (second leg).

Play-offs
The last qualifying round was called "play-off" for the purpose of better marketing opportunities. In the play-offs, too, “champions” and “pursuers” were drawn separately. From this round onwards, all games were marketed centrally by UEFA in order to generate greater media attention and thus increased advertising income.
Losing teams moved to the group stage of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League .
The first legs were on 18./19. August, the second leg on 25./26. August 2009.

Group stage
The top two in each group qualified for the round of 16, while the third placed moved into the round of 32 of the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League . If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:
- Number of points in direct comparison
- Goal difference in direct comparison
- Number of away goals in direct comparison
- Goal difference from all group matches
- higher number of goals scored
- Club coefficients

Knockout phase
Round of 16
The group winners met the runners-up, the latter had home rights first. For the purpose of better marketing through fewer simultaneous matches, the round of 16 was pulled apart. The total of 16 games were now spread over four weeks, on eight game days with two games each, instead of the previous two weeks, on four game days with four games each.
The first legs took place on February 16, 17, 23 and 24, 2010, the second legs on March 9, 10, 16 and 17, 2010.
Quarter finals
The first legs took place on 30./31. March, the second legs on 6./7. April 2010.
Semifinals
The first legs took place on 20./21. April, the second leg on 27./28. April 2010.
final
The final took place for the first time on a Saturday. Inter Milan won the final 2-0 against FC Bayern Munich. For Inter it was the third win of the highest European title in the fifth finals. Bayern were in the final for the eighth time (four titles). Thanks to Inter's victory, Italy stayed in third place in the UEFA five-year standings, ahead of Germany, and thus still had three solid starters and one qualifier for the UEFA Champions League. With the final victory, Inter Milan also managed to win the triple together with the national championship and the cup victory . Bayern would have achieved the same if they had won.
