McDonald Mariga Wanyama (born April 4, 1987 in Nairobi ) is a Kenyan football player on the position of an attacking midfielder who can also be used on the right wing.
Club career
Career start in Kenya
McDonald Mariga, born in the Kenyan capital, began his active career as a football player at the " Kamukunji High School ". Among other things, he won two national championship titles (2002 and 2003) with the soccer team alongside today's AJ Auxerre player Dennis Oliech . While still in high school, he played club football for the first time when he was accepted into the offspring of the Ulinzi Stars and was active there until 2003. From there he finally came to Tusker FC with play in the Kenyan Premier League . After he was mainly used in the youth department, he moved in 2004 to the lower-class playing and now defunct " Kenya Pipeline FC ", for which he was in action until 2005.
Change to Europe
In the same year he received an offer from Enköpings SK from Sweden , which at that time had its game operations in the Swedish Division 2 , which at the time was still the third highest soccer league in the country. For the club, where he played alongside his compatriot Andrew Oyombe , he only completed one championship game and ranked with the team in the final table in first place of the Norra Svealand relay. With the first place in the table, the team had the chance to qualify for the Superettan , but the team ultimately failed and had to remain in the league. Since Division 2 was replaced by Division 1 as the third highest division in Sweden, it was time for Mariga to change clubs again. This time, however, the change took place within the country, as the Swedish first division club Helsingborgs IF made him a lucrative offer. After his teammate Oyombe, with whom he was already active at Tusker FC, spent another year with the Swedish fourth division club, Mariga accepted the offer of the first division club. The first successes at the new club were not long in coming.
In his first season as a professional football player, the native Kenyan made 23 of a total of 26 possible league appearances in the 2006 season , in which he scored four goals and placed the team in a comfortable fourth place in the final table. 2006 also went very well for the trained midfielder in the official Swedish cup competition . After good team performance, the Gefle IF were defeated 2-0 in the final of the competition , with which Mariga recorded his first professional title. In the 2007 season , the 1.88 m tall player made 14 league appearances and two goals before some top international clubs expressed their interest in the young Kenyan. Among them were some English clubs, such as Portsmouth FC , whose coach and manager Harry Redknapp only narrowly failed due to a transfer of the promising African talent. The main reasons for this were, above all, the negotiation of the game or work permit and the rumored transfer fee of around 1.7 million euros . Since a Premier League club can only accept players whose home country is among the top 70 countries in the FIFA rankings, Mariga had little chance of a move to England's top division, as Kenya was only 124th at the time. After Mariga failed with Helsingborgs IF in the Swedish Supercup of the year 2007 in the final against IF Elfsborg with 0: 1, a change of the new Swedish Supercup finalist became apparent.
Transfer to Italy
For the time being only as a loan variant Mariga was given by the Swedes to Italy in August 2007 to the local first division club FC Parma . Attached to the loan agreement was a purchase option that the Italians could have made for a transfer fee of 20 million Swedish kronor in the summer. After 18 league appearances in which Mariga remained goalless, this returned to his home club. Meanwhile, Parma FC officials decided to bring the talented Kenyan back to the team with a lucrative contract. A four-year contract with a transfer fee of 18 million Swedish kronor was negotiated through the former international player and today's players' agent Martin Dahlin , which Mariga signed shortly afterwards. However, 25% of the income also went to the Enköpings SK , whose managers had brought the Kenyan to Europe; the money served almost exclusively as training compensation .
Since the professional team of FC Parma had to start their game operations after relegation to the 2007/08 season in the Serie B , McDonald Mariga came this season increasingly in the midfield of the team initially trained by Luigi Cagni and taken over by Francesco Guidolin at the end of September 2008 . He made 35 league appearances, with a record of four hits. Although he was often only used as a substitute player in the first games, this improved as the season continued, with Mariga increasingly being on the lawn for the entire duration of the game. His four goals he scored all within only four games between the 28th and 32nd championship round; in the 4-1 away win over FC Empoli on March 13, 2009, he even managed a double. With the team, Mariga finally ranked second in the final table and was thus automatically empowered, together with the first-placed, AS Bari , to move up to Italy's first class again. In the Coppa Italia the 2008/09 season did not go particularly well for Mariga and FC Parma. In two missions, in which he also gave an assist, the Kenyan midfielder and the team were eliminated in the 2nd round against Catania Calcio with 1: 2 in extra time from the current cup competition.
After the successful promotion to Serie A, Mariga was used in nine championship games for the Northern Italians , in which, however, he remained without a goal. Since after the team's return to the top Italian division, international top clubs continued to court the fast and tricky Kenyan, and the 22-year-old was about to change clubs, the takeover of the midfield engine in the winter transfer period was delayed more and more. Since again English clubs, such as Manchester City , tried to acquire the Kenyan, a transfer to the island failed at the end of January 2010. The reason for this was again the non-approval of a work permit from Marigas. Even though Kenya had already moved up to 98th place in the FIFA rankings, according to the English statutes, they still had to be within the top 70 countries in order to be included in the Premier League. If a transfer to England had taken place, Mariga would have been the first Kenyan to ever play in the Premier League. The rumored transfer fee would have been between 7 and 8.5 million British pounds in the event of a commitment . Mariga's training association Enköpings SK and Helsingborgs IF, with which he was active from 2006 to 2007, would also have contributed to the transfer fee. Even the Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga did everything in his power to ensure that Mariga's transfer to Manchester City went well and even offered to help him get a work permit.
Surprising move to Inter Milan
After the move to Great Britain was doomed to failure, Mariga moved on February 1, 2010, the last day before the transfer deadline, within the league to Inter Milan . The club did not pay the full transfer fee, but was a co-owner of the Kenyan together with Parma FC. With this system, which is often common in Italy, the two clubs made a so-called “ cash-plus-player deal” in English , with FC Parma getting half of the transfer rights from Jonathan Biabiany and Chilean Luis Jiménez as loan players. At Inter Milan, Mariga signed a contract with a term of around four and a half years until June 30, 2014. After the conclusion of the well-paid contract, the president of the club, Massimo Moratti , said that Mariga's move was the best that Inter Milan in the Winter transfer period could have happened. The native Kenyan made his team debut just two days after signing the contract when he came onto the pitch in the second minute of added time for Wesley Sneijder in the semi-final first leg of the Coppa Italia 2009/10 . The game ended in a 1-0 win for the Milanese after a goal by Diego Milito . Mariga made his Serie A debut for Inter, ironically, in a game against his previous club, Parma FC, on 10 February 2010 when he came on as a 68th-minute substitute for three-time African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto'o .
At the end of the 2009/10 season , Mariga and his club were in first place in the Italian final table, two points ahead of runner-up AS Roma and a comfortable twelve-point lead on third, AC Milan . The Kenyan himself was used in eight league games in which he scored one goal. He made this on April 24 in a 3-1 home win over the later relegated Atalanta Bergamo , when he put the ball after Eto'o in the 35th minute of the game with a right-footed shot in the opponent's goal. In addition to the championship title, Mariga also won the Coppa Italia with the team, with the team defeating AS Roma 1-0 in the final without Mariga. The Kenyan midfielder also had three short appearances of just a few minutes in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League , where he played in the games against FC Chelsea , CSKA Moscow and FC Barcelona . After a 2-0 win over FC Bayern Munich in the final , in which McDonald Mariga had to let the more experienced football players go first and was not used, the Kenyan was also allowed to adorn himself with a third title at the new club.
In June 2010 Inter Milan brought him as a fixture in the team and dissolved the joint ownership with FC Parma. At the same time, Biabiany was brought back to the team and an estimated transfer fee of 9.5 million euros was paid for both players. From the 2010/11 season onwards , the Kenyan international will increasingly play in the midfield of the successful northern Italian team.
For the 2011/12 season he was awarded to the Spanish first division club Real Sociedad . For the second half of the 2012/13 season, McDonald Mariga was loaned to FC Parma, where he had already played between 2007 and 2010. Parma will also have the option to purchase half the rights to the midfielder. Since he suffered an adductor injury at Parma shortly afterwards, he only made two appearances for the rest of the season and returned to Milan for the 2013/14 season .
National team career
Mariga made his first appearance in the national team of his home country Kenya in 2003. Among other things, he was in the Kenyan 17 or 18-man squad that took part in the 2003 CECAFA Cup in Sudan . Another six missions followed in 2004, followed by just as many missions in the following year 2005. After joining the Helsingborgs IF team, Mariga's participation rate in the Kenyan national team decreased strangely. The only two appearances in 2006 were followed by three more appearances in 2007, in which year Mariga also scored his first goal in the national jersey when he hit the opponent's goal in a game against Swaziland on March 25, 2007 . Of the games that Mariga played up to 2006, eight were qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup . In qualifying, however, the team retired in the second round as fourth in Group E.
In 2008 and 2009, the agile player made four appearances and scored one goal in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . The team made it to the third qualifying round , where it was eliminated in group 2 behind the first-placed and thus World Cup participant Nigeria , the second-placed Tunisia and the third-placed Mozambique as bottom group. In 2010 he was used to date (as of July 7, 2010) in a single game against Yemen .

Family / private
Mariga comes from a sports-loving family. His father, Noah Wanyama , was a soccer player in Kenya ( AFC Leopards ) and in the Kenyan national team. There he held the position of a left winger and practically transferred his athletic and, above all, football talent to his children. In addition to McDonald Mariga, the eldest son of his family, two of his younger brothers, Victor and Thomas Wanyama , are also active as professional football players. Victor currently plays as a legionnaire in England at Tottenham Hotspur , with Thomas playing for the reigning Kenyan champion Sofapaka . Her current (July 2010) 17-year-old sister Mercy is the captain of the basketball team at the high school in Lang'ata , a suburb of Nairobi. In addition to her basketball career, Mercy Wanyama is also a soccer and netball player .
Trivia
A survey carried out on the African Internet portal mtnfootball.com at the beginning of 2010 showed that Mariga is one of the 20 best players on the African continent. In the election, he reached eleventh place in front of players like Alexandre Song or Steven Pienaar .
