Christopher "Chris" Patrick Baird (born February 25, 1982 in Rasharkin , County Antrim ) is a Northern Irish football player .

Club career

Baird played for Northern Irish club Ballymena United in his youth and was signed by English club Southampton FC for £ 100,000 at the age of 16 .

The defender made his professional debut on March 22, 2003 as a substitute for David Prutton in a home game against Aston Villa. His second appearance followed at the beginning of May 2003, when he was substituted on in the game against Arsenal at a score of 0: 5 after 26 minutes (final score 1: 6). On the following and final match day of the 2002/03 season, he was on the starting line-up in the 1-0 away win against Manchester City and a week later in the final of the 2003 FA Cup against Arsenal. In the 1-0 loss to the favorites, Baird was one of the best players on his team.

In the following season he was loaned twice briefly, first from late September to November 2003 to Walsall FC , then between March and May 2004 to Watford FC . Baird was in the starting line-up at both clubs. In the season 2004/05 Baird came to no competitive use for Southampton and rose with the club from the Premier League in the Football League Championship . There he was only able to play his way back into the team halfway through the season and came more often towards the end of the season. In the 2006/07 season Baird was a regular and reached the promotion play-offs with the club. There the club was defeated in the first round Derby County on penalties. He was voted Player of the Season by the Saints fans by a wide margin.

For the new season he was signed by the first division club Fulham , where Lawrie Sanchez, the former national coach of Northern Ireland, occupied the managerial position. In addition to Baird, Steven Davis , David Healy and Aaron Hughes brought three other Northern Irish national players. Fulham paid a £ 3.025 million transfer fee for the defender. After he was mostly in the starting line-up in the first half of the season, he lost his place in the team after the dismissal of Sanchez in December 2007 and was then rarely used under the new coach Roy Hodgson .

National team

Baird made his debut on June 3, 2003 in the away game against Italy in the Northern Irish national team . Since then he has been a regular on the Northern Irish defensive and played a large part of the competitive games in the qualifications for the Euro 2004 and 2008 and the World Cup in 2006 and World Cup in 2010 . In qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France, in which Northern Ireland was able to qualify for a major tournament for the first time in his career, he played 9 of the 10 games and was then added to Northern Ireland's squad. He played the first game against Poland on the starting line-up and was replaced in the final quarter of an hour. It was his only appearance in the team that made it to the round of 16. In August 2016, he announced his retirement from the national team after a total of 79 international matches.
