Archon eponymos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Archon eponymos ( Greek  ἄρχων ἐπώνυμος ) was an office in ancient Athens . The original position of the office is controversial, probably the archon eponymos took over the state leadership after the basileus , while the priestly duties and the warfare lay with other archons .

Archaic time

The Archon eponymos was most likely the “chief official” of Athens in the archaic period and head of the polis . His name gave the year the name and he was probably also the superior of the other eight archons, chief judge of Athens and chief warlord, which is controversial, however. The archon polemarchos is often seen as a military leader .

Classic time

The eponymous archon was still the supreme court lord of Athens and headed the college of archons. He was responsible for the family and inheritance law, he was the "guardian of the family". This has included chairing legal proceedings in this area. He led the large community festivals, the Dionysian and Thargelien , and ordered the choirs and Choregen and the hard embassies to Delos .
