Scandals

In April 2005 the Georgian Football Association was shaken by an embezzlement scandal. President Merab Schordania was forced to resign after he was arrested on suspicion of embezzling funds from the Dinamo Tbilisi Association amounting to one million US dollars. He was released four months later without a trial and paid the state several hundred thousand lari , which is said to have corresponded to the amount of money he had embezzled. The exact amount was not disclosed.

Schordania had already been in prison for tax evasion from December 2003 to January 2004 , but was initially able to remain in office. Back then, too, he bought himself free, paying the treasury around 340,000 US dollars.
