history
Predecessor clubs
Spora Luxembourg
The Club Athletique Spora Luxembourg in 1923 by a merger of Racing Club Luxembourg founded and Sporting Club Luxembourg. Both parent clubs were among the most successful clubs in the early years of Luxembourg football. Racing became the first champion in 1910. Sporting became champions in 1911 and 1919. In the twenties and thirties, Spora Luxemburg and the Red Boys Differdange fought for supremacy in the Grand Duchy. In the first fifteen years Spora won the championship seven times and won the trophy three times. After the Second World War, the triumphs became rarer. They became champions four times and the trophy was won another five times. In 1956 Spora ensured the greatest success of a Luxembourg team in the European Cup. In the European Champions Cup , they beat the German champions Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the second leg. The first leg was lost 4: 3. Had the away goals rule been applied back then , Spora would have progressed. At that time, a playoff was scheduled, which Spora lost 7-0. In the 1964/65 UEFA Cup , they beat FC Basel 1-0 in the second leg after losing the first leg 2-0. Spora was thus the most successful Luxembourg club. For this club, "Racing" stands in the name of the new club.
Union Luxembourg
Union Sportive Luxemburg was founded in 1925 through the merger of US Hollerich Bonnevoie and Jeuness Sportive Verlorenkost . Before the merger, Hollerich was one of the best clubs in Luxembourg. Among other things, the club won the championship five times in a row (champions in 1912 and from 1914 to 1917; no championship was held in 1913). After the merger, the championship title was won in 1927. Until the end of the Second World War, the club won no further titles. In 1940, at the behest of the Nazis, the club had to change its name to “Verein für lawn games 08 Luxembourg”. In 1945 the association took its old name again. It was not until 1959 that the club should collect titles again. Between 1959 and 1971 the club won two championship titles and five cup wins. In the 1970/71 European Cup Winners' Cup , the Union beat Turkish representative Göztepe Izmir 1-0 in the second leg. For Union it was the first victory in the European Cup. Union won its second win with a 1-0 win over Norwegian representatives FK Bodø / Glimt . In the seventies and eighties, the club always finished in the top four in the championship. In the early 1990s, the club won three more championships in a row. Union won its last title in 1996 when it won the cup. After the turn of the millennium, the club went downhill. The low point was relegation from the national division in 2005 and marked an inglorious end for one of the most successful clubs in Luxembourg. For this association the "Union" stands in the name of the new association.
FC Aris Bonneweg (CS Alliance 01 Luxembourg)
On March 14, 2001, the traditional club FC Aris Bonneweg, founded in 1922, merged with the smaller CS Hollerich to form the short-lived FC Alliance 01 Luxembourg . Aris Bonneweg, Bonnevoie in French, was a three-time champion of the Grand Duchy and a six-time cup finalist, albeit with only one victory in these finals. Aris Bonneweg spent 42 seasons in the highest league in Luxembourg. For the club, the "FC" stands in the name of the new club.
Sports development after the merger
In its first season, the club finished seventh in the Luxembourg national division . In the 2007/08 season, the runner-up title was won - with a clear gap to the champion F91 Dudelange . In 2014, the RFC Union Luxemburg was relegated from the national division. After a season in the second division, he was immediately promoted back to the BGL Ligue.
In the Coupe de Luxembourg , RFCU have reached the semi-finals twice since the merger. In the 2010/11 season, the club failed at home against FC Differdange 03 with 0-2. In 2016/17 RFCU dropped out of the competition with a 4-0 defeat at CS Fola Esch . In 2018, the cup victory was celebrated for the first time. In the final they prevailed 4: 3 n.E. against US Hostert .
