NK Primorje , sometimes referred to as Primorje Ajdovščina , was a Slovenian football club from Ajdovščina . The club played several seasons in the Slovenska Nogometna Liga and was several times in the finals of the national cup.
history
The NK Primorje, founded in 1924, initially competed in a lower class after Slovenia gained independence in 1991. In the summer of 1993, when he was second in the second division, he was promoted to the Slovenska Nogometna Liga for the first time . Here the team established itself in the back of the table and was partly in the fight to stay in the league.
1996 NK Primorje reached the cup final for the first time, in which they had to admit defeat in the first and second leg NK Olimpija Ljubljana . The following year the team surprised as runner-up behind Maribor Branik . In addition, the club moved into the cup final again, this time the champions from Maribor prevailed after a 0-0 draw and a 3-0 win and won the double . NK Primorje qualified for the European Cup for the first time . In the 1997/98 European Cup Winners' Cup , the team moved to the round of 16 after victories against Union Luxemburg and AIK from Sweden, where they were eliminated from the Dutch representative Roda JC Kerkrade after two defeats. In the league, the team narrowly missed the UEFA Cup as fourth in the table , but made it into the final of the national cup for the third time in a row. After a 2-1 first leg win, a 3-0 defeat in the second leg against NK Rudar Velenje meant missing the title again.
The following seasons were changeable for NK Primorje. If the team was still in a relegation battle in the 1998/99 season, they achieved third place in 2001. In 2002 the team repeated the best result in the club's history as runner-up, series champion NK Maribor had a six point lead. In 2004, the team moved into fourth in the six-club championship finals, but finished last. Since Olimpija Ljubljana did not receive a UEFA license and FC Koper and Mura Murska Sobota had not applied for one, the team nevertheless qualified for the 2004/05 UEFA Cup . Here she failed in the second qualifying round at Dinamo Zagreb .
Then the seasons were changeable again. In 2006, the team of NK Primorje finished third from bottom of the last non-relegation place. There followed two years in the middle of the table before the club relegated to the second division in 2009. The immediate resurgence was followed by direct relegation as bottom of the table.
After relegation from the first division in 2010/11, the club broke up at the end of May 2011 due to financial difficulties.
After the club ended in 2011, a new club was founded under the name DNŠ Ajdovščina and had to start over in the fourth division of the Slovenian league system. Thus, all youth departments could be absorbed and reintegrated.
