Stephan Behlen

Stephan Behlen (born August 5, 1784 in Fritzlar ; † February 7, 1847 in Aschaffenburg ) was a German forestry practitioner and forest scientist and forest science writer. Through his essays, he has made a significant contribution to promoting forest science as a natural science. He is also known for his contributions to geology and mining in the Spessart.

Life

Behlen was trained by the professors who moved to Aschaffenburg from the disbanded University of Mainz. He initially acted as land commissioner in 1803 and was finally appointed electoral forest controller in 1804. In 1808 Behlen was appointed forester in the Lohr am Main office . He retained this task even after Aschaffenburg's political affiliation with Bavaria. In 1819 he took over the administration of the Kothen Forestry Office .

Behlen taught from 1821 to 1832 as a professor of natural history at the forestry school in Aschaffenburg . In 1833 he was appointed rector of the newly established trade school. He retired in 1835 and died on February 7, 1847 in Aschaffenburg.

He went down in forest history together with Christian Peter Laurop by publishing the systematic collection of forest and hunting laws of the German federal states (Hadamar 1827 to 1833, 5 vols.). He continued this series in the archive of the forest and hunting laws of the German federal states (Freiburg 1834–47, 28 vols.). He was editor and founder of the Allgemeine Forst- und Jagdzeitung , which he published from 1825 until his death. In addition, he edited and lectured from 1823 until his death, the magazine for forest and hunting for Bavaria . He had revived the magazine with Johann Christian Friedrich Meyer , Carl Emil Diezel and Georg Franz Dietrich from Winckell .
