He attended the Pädagogium Halle from 1773 to 1777 and then from 1777 to 1780 the Grimma State School . In 1780 she was enrolled at the University of Leipzig . He took up a degree in law and cameralistics , which he was unable to complete as a result of a fall from a horse and an accompanying chest ailment, which did not allow him to work predominantly at his desk. Winckell then took up a three-year apprenticeship as a hunter and forester in Sitzenroda in 1781 , his teacher being mainly a hunter, which is why he had to develop forest science independently from literature.

Winckell withdrew to the inherited manor of Schierau around 1784 , which he managed from then on. On the side he devoted himself to his studies. In 1794 he had to sell the estate to the Hereditary Princess of Anhalt-Dessau . He came into the service of Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau . However, he was denied the prospect of a position in forestry and hunting, which is why he left the service in the principality in 1802.

Winckell first settled on the family estate in Obernitzschka , then in 1807 he moved to Machern . Through the mediation of Moritz August von Thümmel he got a job as administrator of the forest of the barons of Thüngen in October 1812 . He stayed there until 1832. Then he returned to Schierau.

Winckell was a full member of the Society for the Advancement of the Entire Natural Sciences in Marburg and the Ducal Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Meiningische Societät der Forst und Jagdkunde .
