The FC Sporting Mertzig is a Luxembourg football club from Mertzig .
history
The club was founded in 1925 as Club Sportif Mertzig and was renamed FC Sporting Mertzig in 1934. During the German occupation of Luxembourg between 1940 and 1944, the club was forced to use the Germanized abbreviation FK (football club). In 1952 the association dissolved, in 1961 it was re-established.
The team has its game operations in the stadium "An den Burwiesen" , which can accommodate up to 2,500 spectators.
In 1983 Sporting Mertzig rose to the second highest Luxembourg league for the first time, and in 1995, being runner-up in the table, they were promoted to the national division . The club was in the top division of the country for eight seasons before most sponsors left the club in 2003. The club could not prevent relegation to the second division in 2003 and the third division in 2009.
In the Luxembourg Cup competition , Sporting Mertzig reached the semi-finals in 1991/92 and 1999/2000.
