Valerie Babette Louise Hobson (born April 14, 1917 in Larne , Ireland (now Northern Ireland ), † November 13, 1998 in London ) was a British actress .

Life

The daughter of a British officer graduated from London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her debut on stage and in film as a teenager. At 17 she received a reputation in Hollywood , where she did not find her pleasant artistic work with roles in thrillers and horror films . Her best-known roles during this time were the unhappily married wives of "Baron Frankenstein" (not to be confused with the heroine played by Elsa Lanchester ) in Frankenstein's Bride and The Werewolf of London (both 1935).

Back home she became one of the leading actresses in British cinema and, in her roles, the epitome of the elegant and well-bred English lady. Her successes included films such as Testflug QE 97 (1939) with Laurence Olivier , The Years Between with Michael Redgrave , David Leans Mysterious Inheritance (both 1946), Restless Blood (1947) with Stewart Granger and above all the classic Adelpflicht (1949) with Alec Guinness . In the mid-1950s she withdrew from the film business.

From 1939 until the divorce in 1952, she was married to the film producer Anthony Havelock-Allan , with whom she had two children. In 1954 she married the politician John Profumo (1915-2006), who was appointed British Secretary of the Army in 1960 . During the 1963 Profumo affair , unprecedented for the time , which led to his withdrawal from politics, Valerie Hobson stood by her husband and stayed by his side until her death in 1998. The son David Profumo (* 1955) comes from the marriage .
