Anthony Havelock-Allan

Anthony Havelock-Allan, 4th Baronet (born February 28, 1905 in Darlington , England , † January 11, 2003 in London ) was one of the most important British film producers.

Born into a noble family, Havelock-Allan tried a wide variety of professions before coming into contact with the British film industry in the mid-1930s and working as a producer. He founded his own company, Cineguild , in the early 1940s .

Havelock-Allan was best known as the producer of several films directed by David Lean . The first collaboration marked the war film In Which We Serve (1942). He was also involved in the script for the David Lean films Encounter (1945) (based on the play by Noël Coward ) and Mysterious Inheritance (1946) (based on a novel by Charles Dickens ) and was each nominated for an Oscar . Other important films by Havelock-Allans were the Shakespeare adaptations Othello (1965) with Laurence Olivier and Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet , for which he received an Oscar nomination as a producer in the category of best film . Most recently he produced David Lean's late work Ryan's Daughter (1970).

In the 1960s, Havelock-Allan and his company British Home Entertainment were one of the first to try to establish pay-TV , but failed.

Anthony Havelock-Allan was married to actress Valerie Hobson from 1939 until their divorce in 1952 , with whom he had two children. In 1975 he inherited the title of Baronet of Lucknow from his childless brother . From 1979 until his death in 2003 he was married to the diplomatic daughter Sara Ruiz de Villafranca.
