action

Second world war . British MP Michael Wentworth is drafted. As a Colonel he is used on a rather dangerous special mission that nobody is allowed to find out about, not even his loving wife Diana, who remains behind with their son Robin. When Michael allegedly crashed into the sea in an airplane in 1942 as part of this mission and was declared dead as a result, she was heartbroken. In the course of time Diana realizes that her life must somehow go on and wants to uphold the political legacy of her husband, who is allegedly perished in action. At the insistence of Michael's party friends, she takes over his seat in the lower house and makes a political career. In their love life too, a new man appears on the horizon. She falls in love with the somewhat simple-minded but good-natured and personable farmer Richard Llewellyn, a neighbor of the Wentworths. The father takes care of the Wentworth son Robin, shows him how to go fishing and becomes a true friend of the rest of the family.

From then on, Diana's life went uphill until the war ended in May 1945. Suddenly her lost and dead husband Michael is back at the door. He makes it clear to her that his demise was part of a big production. In truth, he organized and supported the resistance on the European continent occupied by the Nazis as much as possible. In order not to endanger him and his mission, absolute secrecy was ordered, which could actually be maintained until the end of the war. All those involved in this matter, especially Diana Wentworth, are now plunged into deep emotional and conscience conflicts by this new situation, which can no longer be resolved so easily. The years in between, since 1942, have changed a lot at home. Michael Wentworth expects now, 1945, that his wife will of course return his parliamentary seat to him, but she persistently refuses. She has emancipated herself over the past three years. He, on the other hand, cannot come to terms with all the changes that have taken place in his British homeland since his disappearance and complains everywhere. In order to do justice to the morality of the premiere year 1946, his wife returns to her Michael in this film adaptation and ultimately submits to him.

Reviews

The New York Times reported that the film was "an intimate and sometimes touching story (...) intelligently handled by Compton Bennett , who directed the drama with a view to distilling character and perception of his cast ... But it is rather unfortunate that the intense and authentic portrayals of the actors do not match the overall effect of this serious but difficult flick. "

Variety found that while the production standards of the film were high, the script had made a few mistakes, as it was too different from Du Maurier's play and almost half was about the love story between Diana Wentworth and Richard Llewellyn, so the "Resurrection “Redgrave's character, Michael Wentworth, turned out to be quite irritating at least in the middle of the film.

The lexicon of international films judges: "Effective, well-played homecoming melodrama."

The Movie & Video Guide found that the story was "handled sensitively".

Halliwell's Film Guide, however, said it was an "artificial variation of the old Enoch Arden theme". The plot and the appearances are "equally unconvincing."
