McArthur's Head

McArthur's Head

McArthur's Head is a cape on the east coast of the Hebridean island of Islay . It is about ten kilometers south of the Port Askaig ferry terminal and 14 km east of the island's capital Bowmore at the southern entrance to Islay Sound . The 332 m high Beinn na Caillich is 1.5 kilometers to the west .

The siblings Thomas and David Stevenson built a lighthouse at McArthur's Head in 1861. The headlight is visible from about 31 km. In 1969 the lighthouse was automated. Together with the lighthouse at Ruvaal, it marks the north and south entrance of the sea strait.
