The Buchan Ness Lighthouse , German Buchan Ness lighthouse , is a lighthouse on Cape Buchan Ness in the Scottish village of Boddam in the Council Area Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the lighthouse was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.
history
After the increasing number of ship accidents on the Buchan coast , the Northern Lighthouse Board decided to build a lighthouse after petitions from magistrates, local councils and the port authorities of nearby Peterhead . The construction, based on a design by Robert Stevenson , was finally carried out between 1824 and 1827. Before that, Stevenson decided to build on Buchan Ness after looking at alternatives. In 1910 a dioptric system was installed. During the Second World War , a mine was washed up on the coast near the lighthouse. The detonation caused minor damage. In 1978 the Buchan Ness Lighthouse was converted to electric lighting. Over the decades, the luminosity increased from an initial 6500 cd to 2 million cd. The lighthouse has been automated since 1988.

The 35 meter high, slightly tapered tower is painted alternately with red and white ribbons. There is a lantern with a protruding circumference. The fire at a height of 40 m above sea level sends a white signal every five seconds with a range of 18 nautical miles (33 kilometers). Inside there are 166 steps leading up to the fire. The cape, which is connected to the mainland via a depression, was already connected to Boddam by a seven-horse wooden bridge during the construction period. In 1963 this was replaced by a reinforced concrete bridge.
