Boddam is a village in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It is located around four kilometers south of the center of Peterhead on the North Sea coast.
history
Boddam developed with sea fishing. During the 16th century, the Keith clan built Boddam Castle, which is still in ruins today . The Buchan Ness Lighthouse was built in 1827 on the offshore Cape Buchan Ness . In 1845 the construction of two ports north and south of Buchan Ness was decided by law. From here the Peterhead Granite was shipped, which was mainly taken from a quarry above Boddam. In 1952, the RAF Buchan Air Force Base, which was used until 2005, was set up 2.5 km southwest . A statue, unveiled in 2009, shows the local people's attachment to the base.
While 550 people lived in Boddam in 1861, the number of inhabitants rose rapidly over the next 20 years to 1766. In 1961, 854 people were counted in Boddam. Ten years later it was already 1429. Since then the number of inhabitants has been declining slightly.
traffic
The A90 running from Edinburgh to Fraserburgh affects Boddam and connects the town directly to the trunk road network. In Stonehaven, the westbound A950 can also be reached within a short time, while to the south the A975 is accessible, which connects the coastal towns to Balmedie .
