Reviews

Lynnette Nicholas of Black Girl Nerds writes that Nabil Elderkins Gully is tough, honest, and visually unforgettable. Although two of the boys shown in the film are black and one is white, their similarities far outweighed their differences. All three were traumatized by their family and economic hardship and formed an indestructible gang. Their bond is not cemented by their ethnicities or their personalities, but by their pain and their intuitive understanding of the pressures they were all exposed to. Gully brings to light that there is a story behind every person who is considered a criminal or an outsider. Jacob Lattimore in the role of Calvin is the perfect personification of a gifted child who was tormented by his demons. Even Charlie Plummer was credible in the role of Nicky, fill his role with an ease, and his chemistry with Lattimore and Kelvin Harrison was appreciable. What makes the character of Jesse played by the latter so special and complex is his silence. His quiet and gentle demeanor is engaging and contributes significantly to the story told in the film, says Nicholas. Often times, black actors embodied pain as loud, aggressive characters, which makes Harrison's portrayal of Jesse even more fascinating in comparison.
