X-Diaries - love, sun & fun belongs to the pseudo-docu-soap genre and was broadcast by the TV channel RTL 2 between 2010 and 2015 from Monday to Friday at 6:00 p.m. From January 7, 2013 to January 11, 2013, reruns of X-Diaries were broadcast from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to make way for the Berlin - Tag & Nacht spin-off Cologne 50667 . At the beginning of April 2013, RTL 2 confirmed the production of a fifth season which will consist of 80 episodes. At the beginning of March 2014, RTL 2 announced the extension by a sixth season, but the exact number of episodes has not yet been determined. Since it is a pseudo-docu-soap, the acts shown are only acted out. The actors do not act according to a fixed script, nor is there a dialogue direction. The performers improvise their actions and dialogues.

action

The topics of the program are holiday stories of cliques, families and couples who spend their summer holidays in holiday regions characterized by beach tourism such as Mallorca , the Costa Brava , the Italian Adriatic , Golden Sands (Slatni pjasazi) and Ibiza and are accompanied by a camera team. Four vacation stories are told in five episodes each, which are always dealt with throughout the week. Four new stories are dealt with every new week. As is typical for programs of this genre, conflicts often arise, both within and between the respective groups of friends. The reason for these conflicts are usually different views on the promiscuity of the clique members. The hectic camera - guided in the style of a documentary - supports the often spontaneous arguments in their intensity. However, as is typical for the genre, the conflicts largely resolve at the end of the program and the protagonists start their way home.

Certain themes in different episodes are similar or repeat themselves over and over again. Examples of this would be relationship crises, friend disputes or partner swaps.

concept

The concept of such programs is to give the viewer the impression of a docu-soap , although all actions follow a prescribed script . The means to realize this concept are:

  • Fade-in of interview-like comments by the actors on episode content.
  • Simulate natural dialogues by letting slip of the tongue, pauses in speech or talking in confusion.

reception

criticism

X-Diaries received consistently bad reviews:

“... digging, drinking beer and testing beds. [...] This gives the broadcaster the chance to push the limits of shame even further down. In this way he can show 'families in focus' that have never been seen on television before. […] The broadcaster does not need real actors or real blasts who would be willing to be filmed for “a Huni” going to the paternity test. [...] 'Dokunovela' is what the station calls its 'X-Diaries', a hybrid that aims to combine the drama of a soap opera with the authenticity of a docu-soap. [...] you can of course gloss over the lack of ideas for original and exciting stories. RTL II would not be called RTL II if the broadcaster could afford to resist the temptation to cement the cliché of the Birkenstock-wearing ballerina tourists and busters. Every audience gets the program they deserve. From this point of view, it actually makes no difference whether the station flies trained actors to vacation spots such as Ibiza, Mallorca or Rimini for a lot of money, or whether it provides exhibitionist lay actors such as Melanie with a new platform for the proverbial 'Appel und' nen Ei '. [...] 'He wants to be entertained.' The 'X-Diaries' actually live up to this claim - and at a level that is not significantly below the level of daily soaps such as ' Marienhof ' or ' Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten ' [...] Critics with a tendency towards cultural pessimism have Evening entertainment therefore already predicts doom. Instead of joining their chorus, let's take a very sober look at this form of fast food entertainment for once. In the best moments, the viewer hardly notices that RTL II is selling him for stupid ... "

"It takes ten seconds, then the first breasts can be seen naked [...] Other bust sizes follow, and many of them [...] These [...] swirled RTL2 into a holiday story in Ibiza. That would be really bitter enough if the broadcaster had only found the usual fringe debilitants, which are stupid enough to make a fool of themselves in front of the camera. Where a single bachelor babbles to himself how he can 'flank five women' in one evening. Where a very young boy leaves her boyfriend at home, but disappears into the dunes with a Spanish drug dealer on the first night of vacation so that, in addition to cultural exchange, the exchange of body fluids is not neglected. [...] The really bad thing about this 'X-Diaries' format: TV doesn't even bother to find the real idiots anymore. You subscribe to what is actually called 'Scripted Reality' and let cheap wage laborers act as idiots. That makes this 'written reality' about as true as the company outing of a Bavarian farmer's theater on the stage of the Ohnsorg Theater. Real television even in the beginning, it has long since become obsolete in real television. "

"... If it was the intention of the authors to settle this story more in the comedy area, then exactly that should have been implemented in the game [...] Perhaps the makers noticed that too - one tries relatively quickly here to see the viewer with bare breasts Keeping a good mood. Incidentally, a development of the characters cannot be determined in both stories during the first 50 minutes of broadcasting […] The fact that the viewer for once does not know what the writer was getting at from the first scene is a pleasant change […] Flat dialogues can be not to be ruled out completely here either […] you shouldn't take the format seriously […] some stories get annoying in the pilot after ten minutes… "

"... and foreign shame is right at the top of the program [...] There are many other dubious personalities who accompany the viewers during the broadcast [...] The TV show 'X-Diaries' is the funniest RTL II trash of the summer"

"... The supposed success formula of X-Diaries is already hidden in the title of the series: 'Love, sun & fun.' The summer slump on RTL2 should be filled easily and inexpensively with love, sun and fun [...] Fans of trash TV, voyeurism and a round of foreign shame will probably get their money's worth ... "

"... the focus is already on eroticism and mutual shame [...] after the first few minutes, bare breasts are shown and it's all about the topic of tearing up boys [...] The whole thing could be amusing, exciting and ideally suited to mutual shame if RTL2 at least found a few idiots who actually make a fool of themselves in front of the camera. But unfortunately amateur actors were taken for the roles, the stories about the vacation were invented, dialogues were given and the attraction of the show was taken away ... "

Protection of minors

In October 2010, the Hessian State Agency for Press and New Media (LPR) Hessen announced that it would examine the broadcast in advance from a youth protection perspective from November. The Voluntary Self-Control Television (FSF) also objected to individual episodes of X-Diaries, so that in future these may no longer be shown on television during the day.

The Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM) also criticized the format. It says: “In the second quarter of 2011, the KJM determined a developmental impairment for under 16-year-olds (airtime limit 10 pm to 6 am) in 11 'X-Diaries' cases. The KJM found a developmental impairment for under 12-year-olds (transmission time limit 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) in 20 'X-Diaries' cases. The KJM justified the developmental impairment mainly with the intrusive presentation of the topics of sex and alcohol and the crude language choice. Due to the fictionality of the show, which is not recognizable for adolescents, a socio-ethical disorientation for under 16-year-olds or under 12-year-olds is to be feared. "

The third quarterly report of the KJM states: “As in the second quarter (see KJM press release of July 25, 2011), broadcasting violations for the RTL 2 program 'X-Diaries - love, sun & fun 'noted. (...) Developmental impairment for under 16-year-olds (airtime limit 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.) has now been determined by the KJM again in six 'X-Diaries' cases, and in a further ten 'X-Diaries' cases a developmental impairment for under 12-year-olds (Transmission time limit 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) The KJM justified the developmental impairment primarily with the intrusive presentation of the topics of sex and alcohol and the rude language choice. Due to the fictionality of the show, which is not recognizable for adolescents, a socio-ethical disorientation for under 16-year-olds or under 12-year-olds is to be feared. "

Audience ratings

X-Diaries reaches an average of 0.53 million people in the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49-year-old viewers, which corresponds to a market share of 6.8 percent and is thus above the RTL 2 channel average. With an average of 0.76 million viewers and a 3.5 percent market share, the overall audience is slightly below the average for the Grünwald station.

Trivia

The Polish version is called “Pamiętniki z wakacji”, in German “The diaries from the summer holidays”, and is broadcast on the Polsat channel.
