The Wannenmacherei is a special form of basketry . The Wannenmacher wove during the heyday of this industry in the 18th century flat baskets in which the grain has been projected so that the wind "the chaff from the wheat separated" could.

The manufacture of these "tubs" was very labor-intensive and time-consuming. It took skilled masters almost a working day to complete a tub. The working groups working in family businesses had to produce between 300 and 500 tubs a year to secure their livelihood. One of the centers of tub production was in Emsdetten around 1750 , where up to 30,000 units were manufactured by around 100 family businesses in those years. Half of the residents of Emsdetten were thus dependent on this craft .
