Chaff , even backwater called that when are threshing of grain falling husks and pods, awns , seed heads and stems parts. Chaff is used as roughage .

The separation of the chaff from the grain is usually done with the help of a winnow or an air sifter .

In a figurative sense, the Bible verse Mt 3,12  ELB “separate the wheat from the chaff” has established itself. This means separating the good from the bad, the usable from the useless.
