The J. Schilgen GmbH & Co. KG was a German mechanical weaving based in Emsdetten was (Nordrhein-Westfalen), which acquired in early 2013 by the Setex group and transferred to the Setex textile GmbH.

The industrial company, family-run up to the fifth generation, specialized in the manufacture of technical fabrics . It was founded in 1873 as a craft business and has since developed from a jute spinning and weaving mill to today's specialist manufacturer of individual technical fabrics made from man-made fibers and partly from natural fibers . At the end of the 20th century / beginning of the 21st century, it was the last company in Europe to still process jute in large quantities. Schilgen was the market leader in the manufacture of wide fabrics and the only manufacturer of very large widths.

history

Like many similar companies in the 1870s along the then new railway line to the overseas ports on the North Sea coast, the Schilgen jute spinning and natural fiber weaving mill was founded in the newly developed "hinterland" of the port cities on the North Sea coast. Their overseas ports provided for the import of raw materials for jute and at the same time offered additional sales markets such as B. sailmakers and sack manufacturers to export opportunities . Emsdetten became a textile city and the center of German jute and linen weaving.

The mechanization of textile production, which began in 1830 with the processing of cotton , also began in 1880 with jute. The use of spinning machines and mechanical looms as well as the continuous development of these also allowed Schilgen to expand. Due to the increasing industrialization of the countries of origin of jute, the main business shifted more and more to higher quality textiles. In addition, manufacturers and suppliers from Asia dominated and still dominate the world market. From around 50 textile manufacturers in Emsdetten, four are still on site today.

Company headquarters in Emsdetten

When the fourth generation joined the family business, the company was no longer competitive with classic textiles. There was a crisis in the textile industry.

The company was saved by the production of textile wallpapers that had become fashionable for a few years , while at the same time it successfully experimented with technical textiles made of synthetic and natural materials for very different applications.

After that, the medium-sized company found and expanded a market niche with the production of special technical fabrics . The jute weaving was finally closed in 2006. J. Schilgen GmbH & Co. KG then produced industrial textiles and wide fabrics for a wide variety of uses. Among other things, Schilgen was a leading manufacturer of fabrics in very large widths of a maximum of 5.40 m.

With effect from January 1, 2013, 140 years after the company was founded, the Setex Group took over the business activities of the Schilgen company as the “Schilgen Technical Fabrics” brand. Production has been combined with Anton Cramer GmbH & Co. KG, which is also part of the Setex Group, under the name Setex-Textil-GmbH in Greven .

Special fabrics for art projects

The best-known customer is the artist couple Christo and Jeanne-Claude , who each covered the Reichstag with special fabrics from the Schilgen company in 1995 , implemented the “Wrapped Trees” project in Switzerland in 1998 and the installation “The Gates” in New York's Central Park in February 2005 realized after 26 years of planning.

For each of these projects, Schilgen produced approx. 100,000 m² of fabric on a single special weaving machine.
