history
The school opened on September 7, 1970. The architect was K. Terhechte from Greven . The namesake are the siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl . It has been an all-day school with school meals since 1991 . In 2003 a renovation and expansion of the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule was completed in order to be able to accommodate four class trains.
From the sixth grade onwards, the school takes part in the “Extended French Lessons” trial and focuses on social learning . There are various educational topics and a program against bullying .
Rampage in the Geschwister-Scholl school
On November 20, 2006, an 18-year-old former pupil (Sebastian B.) of the school injured 12 pupils, a pregnant teacher and the caretaker by gunshots from muzzle-loading weapons and 22 other people with smoke bombs . He then killed himself. He had booby traps on his body which had to be defused by the police after his death, as well as he had hidden bombs in the school building. The police also found explosives in his vehicle and in the garage where the perpetrator lived.
The young man had already asked for help in internet forums two years earlier and reported on his plan, which he saw as the last resort. The reasons he gave in the farewell letter were that he had been bullied by his classmates and teachers and that he had not found social contact with other people. The farewell letter was published in the media in a heavily modified form. The act sparked renewed discussion as to whether video games promote violence in schools .
