Holthausen is a district of the municipality of Laer in the Steinfurt district in the north of North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

location

Holthausen is located with about 600 inhabitants in the southern tip of the Steinfurt district , on the eastern edge of the Baumberge . It extends over an area of 395  ha . It belongs to the Kernmünsterland , part of the Westphalian lowland bay . In the east, south and west the village borders on the two Billerbeck farmers 'associations Temming and Esking, which together with the farmers' associations Aulendorf and Langenhorst, which also belong to Billerbeck, form the Beerlage . In the north lies the district of Laer, with which the political municipality Laer is formed.

traffic

The traffic connection is in the north-south direction via the state road 550. This runs via Laer in the north to Steinfurt and in the south via Havixbeck to Bösensell. In the east-west direction, Münster and Coesfeld can be reached indirectly via the state roads 506 and 581. The federal highway 54, which runs approx. 7.5 km east of Holthausen, and the federal highway 51 to the south, approx. 15 km away, with connection to the A1 and A43 motorways, form the supraregional connection to the transport network. The two main traffic axes A1 and A43 ensure the traffic connections to the Ruhr area, to Münster and to the north, towards Osnabrück and Bremen / Hamburg. In addition, a well-developed network of regional and district roads provides traffic connections to neighboring towns and communities.

history

First mention

In 1040 Holthausen was first mentioned as the official court of the Munster monastery of Überwasser . In the oldest records of the monastery income it can be read that 13 hereditary farms belonged to Holthausen, 3 of which were in the local area.

Knight of Holthusen

The knight family von Holthusen had their seat here. They were ministerials and administrative officials of the monastery Überwasser in Münster and administered the important property of the monastery in Holthausen. The first documented evidence of the "Knights of Holthusen" dates from 1177 in which Knight Walthard von Holthusen is named. The first written mention of the parish of Holthausen comes from the year 1265. A castle also belonged to the Holthausen estate. The entire property was later donated to the Überwasser monastery by two nuns from the von Holthusen knightly family. As a result, the head of the monastery became the mistress of the castle in Holthausen and often resided there, for example during the Anabaptist period . The old castle was later laid down by the abbess von Vincke and replaced by a new one. In 1773 the Überwasser monastery was closed. The castle and the estate were given to the University of Münster for study purposes. Now the castle and estate were leased separately. The castle was finally demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. The last remains of the foundations and outer walls of the castle complex were not removed until around 1950.

Looting and Fire

In the course of the Dutch War of Independence against the Spaniards (1568–1648), the village and church were sacked by the Spaniards in 1590. Holthausen experienced another disaster in 1771, when almost all houses were destroyed by a large fire.

Office and community

The official constitution was introduced with the rural community order for Westphalia of October 31, 1841. An administrative district (Amt) was formed from several municipalities under one bailiff . The provisions of the French constitution that were valid up to that point were no longer in force and the Laer mayor's office became the “ Laer Office ” consisting of the municipalities of Laer and Holthausen.

In 1850 Holthausen was merged with Laer to form a joint municipality that had its own representative; however, both parishes each retained their own individual parish councils.

On July 1, 1969, the Laer office with the municipalities of Laer and Holthausen was dissolved. According to the law on the reorganization of municipalities in the district of Steinfurt, both municipalities merged to form a municipality of Laer, which was free of any office.
