Parish Church of St. Bartholomew

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomäus is a listed church building in Laer , a municipality in the Steinfurt district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is the parish church for the St. Marien (Holthausen) branch community .

History and architecture

The church building was first mentioned in a document in 1181 and sold to the Johanniter in Burgsteinfurt in 1278.

The late Gothic hall church with three bays , a choir bay in the 5/8 end and a north sacristy was built from Baumberger sandstone blocks. The massive west tower is marked 1448. Construction began in the west, where parts of a previous Romanesque building are still integrated. The Romanesque west tower was sheathed. According to an inscription in the tower hall, it was damaged by fire in 1599. The choir vault and the spire were renewed. The originally round arched tower portal was replaced by a rectangular one in 1902 and integrated into the niche of the window above. A baptistery was added in 1937. The outer walls are structured by buttresses , cornices and lancet windows. The pointed arch windows and panels are mostly decorated with fish-bubble tracery , which is also continued on the west tower. A stair tower was added to the tower on the south side .

The interior is divided into wide bays by round pillars. The ribs of the busted rib vaults in the nave meet in a closing ring . The aisles are much narrower. A Gothic wall niche is set into the north wall of the nave. The masonry of the previous Romanesque building is visible in the northwest aisle up to the window sill.
