Thomas Aders

Thomas Aders (* 1961 in Neuenkirchen ) is a German journalist and correspondent for ARD .

Life and work

Aders studied modern and contemporary history, politics and philosophy first at the University of Münster and later at the LMU Munich , where he did his doctorate with a thesis on the father of the German financial constitution in the Basic Law and first constitutional court president Hermann Höpker Aschoff . He worked as a scientific editor at the German Institute for Distance Learning at the University of Tübingen , wrote for newspapers such as the Münstersche Zeitung and the Süddeutsche Zeitung and completed his internship at the Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Stuttgart.

From 1992 he worked as a reporter for radio and the state show. In 1998 he moved to the foreign editorial team of Südwestrundfunk ( SWR ) in Stuttgart. In addition to assignments in many countries in Europe, Asia, southern Africa and North America, he specialized in the Middle East, where he worked for ARD from the Cairo studio . Before, during and after the Iraq war , he mainly reported from the ARD branch in Baghdad . Partly together with other correspondents, Aders produced many documentaries and reports on the Middle East, including portraits of Arafat and Zarqawi .

From 2006 to 2011 he was the ARD correspondent in South America , based in Rio de Janeiro . From here he also reported for current broadcasts on ARD, such as Tagesschau , Tagesthemen , Morgenmagazin, Mittagsmagazin and Weltspiegel, and has so far produced three large documentaries and reports for the ARD holiday program.

Since January 1, 2012, Aders has been reporting from the Arab world as a correspondent from the ARD studio in Cairo . On March 1, 2016, after a four-year approach, he conducted an exclusive interview with the Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad .

Since 2017 Aders has been back in the foreign editorial office of the SWR and has - in addition to representations in the studios abroad - specialized in the production of reports and documentaries for ARD , the television of Südwestrundfunk (SWR) and arte . His documentary “Accomplices? VW and the Brazilian Military Dictatorship ", which he created together with NDR colleague Stefanie Dodt and also led the second camera for Aders, was nominated for the Grimme Prize 2018 and won the Georg von Holtzbrinck Prize for Business Journalism 2018 in the Audiovisual category .

In 2018 he focused on the change in the climate and the effects on living conditions in the European Alps and the phenomenon of environmental migration . For a theme evening at arte , he traveled to Chad and Cameroon in the Sahel zone , Indonesia and the permafrost areas in the Russian province of Sakha ( Yakutia ). In collaboration with experts from the International Organization for Migration in Berlin , Geneva and N'djamena, the focus is on the connection between “climate curse and climate flight”. On October 23, 2019, he was awarded the Georg von Holtzbrinck Prize for Science Journalism in the Electronic Media category for his two documentaries, Klimafluch and Klimaflucht - The true environmental catastrophe (French version: Les damnés du climat ) and Threatening volcano - Iceland's fear of Öræfajökull .

On December 10, 2019, the day the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed , the documentary Shimmer of Hope in the Horn of Africa was broadcast on ARTE , for which Aders had toured Ethiopia , Djibouti and Eritrea . The film tells the story of the tense relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which were marked by two bloody wars, in the 30-year Eritrean War of Independence and the Eritrea-Ethiopia War from 1998 to 2000.

In April 2020, his novel Seelentanz - John Cranko and the Stuttgart Ballet Wonder was initially published as a podcast . The 27 episodes deal with the life of the native South African John Cranko , who made the Compagnie des Stuttgart Ballet one of the world's leading companies within a few years. For his novel, he evaluated the personal memories of dozens of contemporary witnesses, including John Cranko's main dancers such as Márcia Haydée , Richard Cragun , Egon Madsen and Birgit Keil .
